Horse Fair

Aiden is no longer a member of the forum. If you tellmus th approximate year then it might be listed in Kellys

There is no firm listed in the 1956, 1957 or 1958 Kellys under that name. The Haberdashery section for these years under trades does not seem to list anyone in the described area, the nearest being Louis Seff in the Market Hall. It looks like the shop was very small and not listed

There was a Tailor's trimmings shop in Hurst Street under the name M Rose. Listed in the phone book in the 1950s.

Thanks for that

Thanks a lot. Its won me a long standing bet as I always said it was in Hurst Street but my brother said it was in Hurst Street just below the discern. CHEERS

Here is a photo from a facebook page devoted tom identifying the site on unknown photos, identified correctly as 33a Horsefair, corner of Thorpe St. England's are listed in Kellys from 1904 till 1933 editions. Not in 1903 or 1936 editions

When researching my family history, I was able to confirm a family rumour that there was "something to do with horses" in the line.
My GGGF was a horse dealer in Birmingham. George Ellis, 30 Longmore St.

I found a couple of pictures on line, of the horsefair in 1911.

It is strange to think that the odds are good that my GGGF was probably there on the day.

Steve.

Hi. Apparently this was the first part of a pub sign from a pub on Horse Fair. I know there was a White Lion but I can only find fairly recent references to it and wondered if anyone had come across any references to pubs on Horse Fair that start with The!IMG_2759.jpeg

Interesting to read. My Mum & Dad used to tell me to "Go and play in the 'orse road." I wonder if this was where they meant ?

Could it have been an older sign (than in this photo posted by Pedrocut on another thread) of The White Lion ?

Or it could be The Horsetrader pub or The Red Cow both on Horse Fair- but sorry, I have no date on the Horsetrader. The Red Cow - see attached photo - didn't have that style of sign writing or name attached (only the beer suppliers name) in the 1950s, but that doesn't rule out it might be from an earlier sign.

There's the Bulls Head too (corner with Smallbrook Street) but it only has a sign indicating importers of wines and spirits etc and not the pub name.

Ooo good to know. I’ll collect some names then try and do some more research.

The font could give a clue about its date. Someone on this forum may be able to help you with that. I'd hazard a guess at 1910/20s, but I'm no expert !

I remember the Horse fair vividly from 1961 onwards when I worked in bow street at the back of the Catholic church & school. Opposite there near the El Sombrero cafe on the same side of the road was the huge stone Horse water trough and I wonder what happened to it as it most have weighed several tons.

Further info. The Library of Birmingham dates this photo as 4th of December 1950

Description:The west side of Horsefair, Lee Bank, in a photograph taken on 4 December 1950. The large industrial building belonged to F.A. Patterson Ltd, who were manufacturers of leather goods. The road on the right is Holloway Head.
