OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

The last image on this roll or so my information says is linked to the previous photograph and is described as " Old print of the Old Gate at Saltley back in 1890 and of the bar" so I assume this is the bar of the Old Gate (?) again apologies for the quality of the picture and the wholes across it - it was a lot worse until I photo shopped most of them out. A rather washed out image of the barman but plenty of bottles and a large metal till .

Next I have this imposing building but no idea of where it is, some of the notes may suggest it is in Saltey but that is a long shot. Seems to have prams outside the left hand entrance and the figure in the centre seems to have a long gown on. Any offers?

This was the monumment road community centre. Earlier it was the dispensary. This looks like a duplicate

Community Centre Monument Road Ladywood, 1965.webp

Slightly wider shot giving a view of the road and the building to the right - metal windowed factory building over three storeys so I assume rather a large manufacturing site. The wider view allows us to see the sash windows of former pub - not much else to add .

steve the pub sign was uncovered a couple of years back after years of being hidden..

Moving onto Roll 2 and a disappointing roll, basically a re shoot of Roll 1 with a few others added.
First up The Old Engine Tavern or so the sign on the wall says, now Nightingale Knitware Centre, Great Hampton Street, we can see the area signs - Newtown in this case - , apart from the pub sign nothing there to offer any idea that it used to be a pub.

I think this is Gt Hampton Row - not Gt Hampton St (but only a few yards away)!

A bit further along in Vittoria Street we have what is described as " an old house" again taken in 1989, two front doors with a large window in between - there is a large entrance on the right with two windows above and then next door the remains of a property, door and a wall. Seems to give off mixed messages there is a nameplate on the left of the left hand door - but net curtains upstairs and a large gate with a door in.

Lastly on this roll, (that shows the number of repeats and duplicates) while not Strictly Birmingham, just over the border we have a couple of Birmingham icons taken from the early days of the Wythall Transport Museum.
Apologies for the quality of the image - probably a scan of a photo of a photo !
A Corporation bus heading towards us - offers on the type gratefully accepted.

Followed by a view of the entrance with an old style bus stop - compare that image with how the site has developed over the years.

Not a Corporation bus, A Midland Red one! Possibly 4871 (871 KHA) in WMPTE blue & cream though.
In the other photo, the ex- Birmingham prefab was the early stores building, now long gone (given to Avoncroft museum of buildings, Bromsgrove as spres for their one!) and the building in the distance is a former Bristol temporary school class room, in use as the cafe. It's still there serving the same purpose, but is hopefully to be replaced by a new structure soon. Its location also shows how much the site has extended!

Next we have Ladywood bath on Monument Road - no year I am afraid. interesting design of the building two columns of windows either side of the entrance with squares with the square windows, The windows above the entrance have a brickwork style pattern to the glass- moving up is the corporation crest and the tower topping the building off. Can you also see the stealth Scooter , to the right of the entrance just below the two little windows.

Next we have a few pubs - my list tells me this is the Birmingham Arms corner of Hampton Street and St. George Street, looks an atmospheric picture with the two gentlemen making their way home on the right. Not much else to add to the comentary as the detail in the background is rather lacking
EDIT: Duplicate of #762

As we can see this is Geach Arms , corner of Summer Lane and Geach Street, full of interest, selection of cars off down the road to the left,
cyclist on the corner and a small person siting on the steps of the pub. The pub itself has a selection of fine chimneys and its interesting that the building on the right of the pub has a large chimney in relation to the size of the building. Sadly it bears no resemblance to what is there today.

Another that may be a repeat (I cannot get the hang of searching for an image ) is taken in 1929, and is "old yard" back of New John Street West, selection of families gathered around the lamppost in the centre of the yard among the washing - the men standing to one side women and children to the other !!

This next image has lot of questions to it , titled Old bomb site was site of a pub off Suffolk Street, why were they taking a picture from what looks like a upper floor of a bombed out building and where is the ornate brickwork to the right from? I might as well add - why was this brickwork on the upper floor of the building ?

Remaining in the same vicinity, we have now moved to St. Pauls Tavern, on Ludgate Hill, lovely symmetrical building with the central plaque , nice selection of parking meters ( what happened to them) and the large chimney, property to the right has an interesting roof and skylight. Windows have metal frames and have all been retained over the years.

Spent many a dinner hour in there when I worked in George St in the 70's

Last one on this roll ( said it was disappointing) and may also be a duplicate - this is the Brewer and Baker - unfortunately my list has no mention of this but I am sure you will easily identify it. Looking rather worse for wear but looking like it is been refurbished from the left hand end. Large collection of chimneys so I assume fireplaces in all the rooms

Steve the more I look at this I'm convinced its on Monument Rd not far from the swimming baths

Last one for tonight - fine large Ansells pub, this is St. Georges Tavern , corner of Hospital Street and Tower Street impressive building nice arched topped windows on the first floor, interesting how the roof line seems to finish under the "S" of Ansells with the rest of the rook seems to be a flat one(?) There also seems to be four entrances on the side facing us,

Next we have a street corner with the Volcano Snack Bar, interesting that the sign on the corner " the Family Goods People" but I cannot see where this refers to , no other clue and not much information to offer
EDIT: from mikejee
corner of Icknield st and Hingeston St and is shown at https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/threads/icknield-street.10620/page-17#post-821101

As a kid after every session in here it was followed by cup of hot chocolate and a packet of cheese biscuit's , life couldn't get much better .

Evening - thanks for the comments and additional information , we are still on roll 4 and still on the pubs !!

First we have White House corner of New John Street and Unett Street looking rather desolate ( and like its been photoshopped, I haven't and it was taken before computers!!) old and new cars parked out the front and a couple of buildings to the rear. Picture was taken in 1960.

still standing and still open

Next is a rather forlorn image of what used to be the Holy Bush, Frankfort Street and Gee Street, my notes state that the pub had gone before 1928. I have no year, but as you can see all the properties are boarded up , and the windows upstairs seems to be broken. You can just make out the Street lamp on the corner

This is Red House on Wheeler Street , New John Street, small square pub, we can see the house at the rear - only two windows on the frontan d side. Ornate leaded windows at the front of the property and an array of street furniture, belisha beacon , large bollard, lamp with two smaller lamps off it and a keep left sign too. In case you wondered the colour the pub is painted was a very dark burgandy - I have and may have posted a colour slide.

Popping back to Summer Lane, we have The Stags Head, Summer Lane and Brearley Street, the building is still there and the surrounding are still recognisable, however there are no long any buildings behind it in Brearley Street. Love the size of the lamp over the door and the cars - interesting to see on Streetview that the Summer Lane sign is still there, although looking a little tired .
