Good evening! Whilst researching the 1921 Census, I have found an ancestor who was a "Plater and Polisher" at a business called "Lawton" in Harford Street. Are there any photos of the street or a map showing the premises? Many thanks. MARTIN REED

    History of Vyse Street

Thank you Lyn. I've just had a look at the photos in the thread you sent, and Mike's comments about the photos. What a treasure trove! What foresight to have thought of recording these places for posterity. Photos have the power to bring back so many memories. Thank you Mike.

Thank you Mike. I wasn't expecting such a precise photo. What made you take these photos? Was it the threat of demolition?

    History of Vyse Street

Hello again. My great-grandfather (William Reed Sr.) worked at 32 Vyse Street, Hockley as an Electroplate Polisher at Messers Synyer & Beddoes, according to the information he gave on the 1921 UK Census. In addition, his son (William Reed Jr.) worked at 108 Vyse Street, Hockley as a Toolmaker...

Henry Herbert Friend may not have been a good book keeper, but as you can see from the attached photo he was a master silversmith. Attached is a silver cigarette case which I found on an online website and which bears his silversmiths mark "H.H.F."

Good afternoon Janice and thank you for looking up these articles relating to Henry Herbert Friend of Soho Hill, Hockley. I've never seen them before so you can appreciate that they add a lot of extra information about this distant ancestor. I didn't know he'd been to New York, so I will look...

Hello Lyn. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all. My interest is on the business side and the silversmiths and jewellery trade Henry Herbert Friend was involved in. He made some beautiful art deco silverware and pinoeered a new, non-electrolytical method of embossing silver onto glass...

Friend Henry Herbert of Hockley Hill and Soho Hill

Good morning again Lyn and thanks for looking up Henry Herbert Friend. According to the 1920 Electoral Register, Henry Herbert Friend had his workshop at 87 Hockley Hill and lived with his wife Jane at 73 Hockley Hill. As you correctly mention, the 1921 Kelly's Trade Directory cites Henry...
