Crabslaw, I totally agree with you. In the 1940's -1950's I often went to buy 1off screw or nail for Dad's home DIY projects. You didn't have to buy a complete packet of screws or nails like today. The wonderful Little Red shop was on the opposite side of Boulton Road whereas Darlington's was...
My brother was trained as an apprentice Mono Type Setter at K & J's in West Bromwich and went to night school at Birmingham School of Art. He showed me some of the individual cast letters.
These wonderful photographs brought back many happy memories sailing my model yacht on the pool, together with my father and brother in early 1950's. Little did I know that a later in late 50's -60's I would be going to school not far away a new Bournville Boys Grammar T echnical School...
Welcome to BFH .Hope you enjoy sharing your memories on the forum. You have given us quite a list - some I remember and some I don't.
My brother went to Boulton Rd school much earlier towards the end of WW2 in mid 1940's. For some reason I was sent to Rookery Road School in late 1940's and...
Thank you for the 2 pictures of Soho Road, Handsworth. Brought back happy memories of the Elite Cinema just before the Handsworth Library on the right hand side. Often visited the library in 1950's and early 1960's helping with my school homework projects long before the internet and AI
We were pleased to hear about this well justified award. My wife's grandfather was a 'Seal Stone Engraver' on Vyse Street in the late 1800's and retired in the mid 1930's. He learnt this very skilled trade during his 7 year apprentice and then opened his own business after returning from...
Sad to see that my wife's great grandmother's (Ann Lester with her daughter Annie Lester helping ) old 'Refeshment House' at No 204 Dudley Road in 1901 has been demolished only a few years later after 2008
I remember the dancing waters at Bingley Hall. Dad entered some of my early paintings into an art exhibition for children and remember getting a highly recommended. Still enjoy doing my art in retirement
Good morning Will. On behalf of my wife Heather (Wilf's daughter) we would like to thank you for getting in touch with us via this forum post. Wilf often mentioned you . Yes we did meet at Wilf's funeral and we appreciate that you managed to visit him in Weston -Super- Mare . Yes we will pass on...
Sorry to hear this very sad news. The museum is a unique part of the history of Birmingham and will be sadly missed. Lets hope that it can be re opened very soon in better times. We visited the museum a few years ago and so much related to our family history.
Congratulations to Cadbury's reaching this well deserved new milestone in their long illustrious part of Birmingham History. I went to school in Bournville between 1955 and 1961 and enjoyed the surrounding environment. Members of the Cadbury family always came to the school prize day
Sorry to hear sad news yesterday about Ian Lavender. I was at Bournville Boy's Technical Grammar school between 1952 -1958 so Ian would have would have attended 2-3 years later than me. I remember the school had a very good drama society and put on some excellent production. Ian later had stage...
