Janet: I hope that you weren't disappointed after all of your research. If only I had been there more often when the old market hall was still there. By the time I was old enough to go on my own, it had gone. I'm glad my story gave you the inspiration to follow it up though.

I remember my mother taking me to Greys to get packs of stockings at 1s11d. That must have been when I was about 11 in 1963 as I had to go to Barwick Street for braces for my crooked second teeth. So while we were in town we had to make a diversion to Greys to get some new stockings for her.

On reading these posts again today (30th March 2026) I have had a flashback to when I used to be taken there by my mother. Haberdashery items (as I said she was trained as a tailoress in pre-war Belgium) were here favourites- such a suspenders for ladies' corsets as she was always needing new...
