    Soho Road Handsworth

In the late 1959s to early 60s my parents used to get provident cheques from an office up Monument Road on the corner of Resevoir Road.

Warstone Cemetery look up - Phoebe and Matilda Hall

Found! Thanks to MWS's prompt, I have at last put William Oldham to rest. As the attached PDF shows, he did indeed die in Windsor and his 'wife', Sarah Anne Hatton, was present at his death. Oddly, she kept the name East following the divorce, although she attempted to describe herself as a...

Perhaps to draw a line under this saga, I would like to add that I have since returned to GRO and successfully bought a digital death record for £3. Not for the elusive William Oldham; I've decided to wait to see what I get for my £8 PDF. But I am very grateful to Janice for pointing me to...

Warstone Cemetery look up - Phoebe and Matilda Hall

I think I've worked out why my search was negative, whilst Janice was successful. For the death registration place, I put Windsor, Berkshire. When it came back negative, I thought Windsor was maybe too specific, so I omitted it and put Berkshire. What I should have done was put Windsor, like...

"Hope that makes sense". Everything you have said, Janice, makes sense. I wish I could say the same for the Alice in Wonderland nature of the GRO system of searching. It is true that I didn't do exactly what you have very successfully done, but I cannot understand why one search, using the same...

Warstone Cemetery look up - Phoebe and Matilda Hall

I was searching for the same death certificate for William Oldham. I was prepared to spend an extra £3 for an immediate result despite the £8 spent on a PDF. The good news is that I believe I will get a partial refund on the £8 as there will be no result found for that search based on the same...

Warstone Cemetery look up - Phoebe and Matilda Hall

I have just completed a search on GRO, carefully using the references from the Ancestry index, but the result was... no matching result found. I did the search again with variant spellings of the surname, with the same negative result. It seems the search goes on! I think my most obvious next...

'Helpful' hardly describes how far you are willing to go to be...well, helpful! It is clear that I need to be much more observant in all aspects of my research. It must explain why I seem to hit brick walls! Thank you again.

I’ve placed my order for PDF copy of the death certificate. This appears to be the only digital option and cost £8, delivery expected by Wed 3 Dec. I’ll report back. Thanks all for your help.

Gosh! What site do you use to pay only £3? I have been paying £8 on GRO and then there is a waiting time of four working days,

Yes, thank you, I do have that information. I visited the church some years back, and they were very helpful, so I really must make the effort to revisit. My current situation makes it difficult to travel, but I wonder if they might respond to a fee-based search? Worth a try.

City Directory for 1883 has William at The Darwin Tavern, Darwin Street. But your info on his son, Roger Frank, has given me a jolt. I had completely overlooked that he was in Windsor, Berkshire, but I was not aware of the death record for a William Oldham. That is worth the cost of a...

Warstone Cemetery look up - Phoebe and Matilda Hall

Sarah Ann (Annie) Hatton, did indeed take the name Oldham as did the various children, but there doesn't seem to be a marriage certificate. Annie took herself and the children off to New Zealand but there is no evidence William went with them. I have corresponded with descendants of Annie in...

Born 26 Oct 1827, his father John Sealey Olham, gardener of Tennant street. William began as a gardener but 1861 he was a photographer, Oldham and Cooper, New Street. He was co-respondent in a divorce case, abandoned his wife Bethia Barrett, and in 1881 was publican in Darwin Street with his...
