    Hall Green Schools

I attended the school circa, 1949- 1952, and I can remember my parents having glowing opinions of Miss Dark (I was only small at the time, so was not in a position to pass a comment).

    St Phillips Church Cathedral

Thank you Phil. I'm just being pernickety in my old age- it doesn't matter really- except to the Philips of this world, of course. But ecclesiastically, I think , the name of Saint Philip, Apostle and Martyr, is always rendered in English with the single "l". This is taken from the original...

    St Phillips Church Cathedral

Given the iconic nature of the building, and its environs, it's a pity that posters on this thread seem unable to refer to the place properly. ( or am I being too pedantic?)

    St Phillips Church Cathedral

One "l" surely: The Cathedral Church of Saint Philip.

    Stratford Road

As a very small boy- circa 1950- I can remember donning my brand new green school cap and walking to Hall Green Infants and Junior School. Brooklands Road- School Road- Stratford Road. I was happy to notice that those superb Art Deco Apartments on the left were still there when visiting last...

    Brummie sayings & language

No doubt that it's been mentioned before but my father ( ex Kings Heath) had a particular saying describing a rather morose person he had met, "He/She had a face as long as Livery Street" which certainly betrayed his Birmingham origins. (Is that particular thoroughfare particularly long still ?)

    Birmingham Anglican catherdral

Also included in the Cathedral precincts is that rather unusual memorial to COL. Frederick Burnaby. At the risk of being thought pedantic, though, it should be mentioned that the cathedral is dedicated to Saint Philip, apostle and martyr ( that's with one "l" ). ( I suspect that I was named...

    John "Hammer" Lane

I would welcome information about the celebrated Birmingham Bare-knuckle Champion John (or Jack) "Hammer" Lane who fought one of his contests in Shirley in 1835, and later became a publican (like many ex- ringmen) in Birmingham.

Col Frederick Gustavus Burnaby "Galloping Fred” monument

Thank you... and yet here we have an impressive monument to "Galloping Fred",in a very prominant position which (I think) is unique in the country His death must have certainly impressed the cathedral and/or the city authorities at the time.

Col Frederick Gustavus Burnaby "Galloping Fred” monument

While visiting Birmingham last year, I noticed, in the precincts of St. Philip's Cathedral, a rather impressive monument to the memory of COL.Frederick Burnaby soldier, author, traveller and balloonist, who was killed in action at the Battle of Abu Klea in 1885. I 've not seen a similar...
