No doubt that it's been mentioned before but my father ( ex Kings Heath) had a particular saying describing a rather morose person he had met, "He/She had a face as long as Livery Street" which certainly betrayed his Birmingham origins. (Is that particular thoroughfare particularly long still ?)

I would welcome information about the celebrated Birmingham Bare-knuckle Champion John (or Jack) "Hammer" Lane who fought one of his contests in Shirley in 1835, and later became a publican (like many ex- ringmen) in Birmingham.

Thank you... and yet here we have an impressive monument to "Galloping Fred",in a very prominant position which (I think) is unique in the country His death must have certainly impressed the cathedral and/or the city authorities at the time.
