PhD Research. Fatal Drownings in 20th Century Birmingham

I also remember our weekly school swimming lessons at Victoria Rd baths. Me & my two mates loved it so much we went to Woodcock St baths after school (they had a springboard).

PhD Research. Fatal Drownings in 20th Century Birmingham

My Brother Alan (8) was drowned playing at Valley Pit colliery reservoir in 1947. It wasn't in Birmingham but, I just wanted to mention it.

Birmingham Municipal Bank Six Ways Aston

This bank first opened at 22 High St in Dec 1919 and operated in the old shop premises which it had purchased for £775. It required extensive reconstruction work to be carried out, which was completed in 1923 when the formal opening was made on Feb 17th 1923. The adjoining premises at 24 High St...

I seem to remember looking around in Copes on the corner of Coventry Rd & Bowyer St back in the 60s. Don't know if it was Chas E Cope though.

    Mary Street Balsall Heath

Hi Aaron, I have this one of Mary St because my Aunt Betty Middleham ran that cafe in the early 60s. It's just along from Edward Rd.

Lyn, I think I may have a cropped version as apart from the yesterday reference, I can't see that date anywhere. But, thank you for giving me the date anyway.

Thanks for that information Mike, it's certainly brought that incident back to focus for me. Although I can't remember all the details (the fact it was girders makes it more shocking than I remember), every time I've ever passed Hatchett St since, I've thought about that day. Is there a date Mike?

Does anyone else remember the accident on Newtown Row in the early 60s, when a van/lorry with a ladder protruding from it's roof came down from Hatchett St and pierced an out of city bus and killed a passenger?

    Wheeler Street Lozells

It is indeed a sad sight Lyn, the streets I walked as a teenager are now obliterated. The Orient picture house to the right of the flats still resisting demolition for now.

Bromford House Birchfield Road Six Ways Lozells Birchfield

Hi Brummie-lad, I just noticed that the 'Richards Lewis Spokes' shown, later owned the building we knew as the House that Jack Built. The frontage sign on that building shows Lewis S Richards Ltd.

Bromford House Birchfield Road Six Ways Lozells Birchfield

Thank you to the members for giving so much more info than I had from my online search. Because this thread was moved from the Six Ways thread, I am re-posting the images I made of Bromford (Bromfield) House. The first shows the comparison if the bank hadn't been built.

Bromford House Birchfield Road Six Ways Lozells Birchfield

That's a great piece of information Vivienne. It goes somewhat to explaining the demise of the house. Perhaps the reason why they built the bank on their drive was because the house was by then derelict.

    Six Ways Aston

Hi Lyn, I see that Vivienne has now opened a new thread on Bromfield House. I look forward to more information.
