Brummie yes ! Novice no !
The 'then' pictures are taken from old postcards, the 'now' pictures taken from Google Streetview.
The older of the pictures is thought to date from the 1920's.

Hi Ian, Your "now" photo of Church Rd, Yardley is looking from Harvey Rd towards the Swan Island, your "then" photo is looking down Church Rd towards Harvey Rd school. Len.

Church Rd, Infants, Junior & Senior School built 1909, Harvey Rd is on the right of the pic. Len.
 
Well spotted lads. A very simular photo of the swan island was on display at the Gas Light Exhibition.
