William Murphy was baptised a catholic and later his father converted to protestantism. Murphy travelled the country giving his anti catholic lectures. He caused upset wherever he spoke including the infamous Murphy riots in Birmingham. In 1871 he lectured in Whitehaven Cumberland a crowd of over 200 rioted and beat Murphy unconcious, he never recovered from this beating and died in 1872. He was buried at Key Hill cemetery.

I remember Chris Upton telling our group about William Murphy, when we visited Key Hill Cemetery as part of the Jewellery Quarter Walk a couple of years ago.
Chris Upton wasn't at all keen on him..as you say, he caused riots wherever he lectured - and then went away and left them to it!

You and Chris are right I think he was a bit of a bad un, still part of our history though!
