Don't think many Forum members will have seen this squad turn out !

Hi keegs, got any more info on that very early era? My great grandad played in the 1913 cup final for Villa against Sunderland at Crystal Palace in front of a crowd of 122,000. My cousin still has his cup final medal. His name was Tommy Lyons. My moms family all out of Hednesford produced a few professional footballets. My grandad played for Villa (Bill Lyons), his brothers Jim for Derby and Albert for Spurs. They all played for Hednesford Town as well

Great picture Keegs. My family are related to Harry Hampton by marriage. I only found this out because I have a photo of my mums brother sitting in the garden at the family home in Ladywood with a group of people I did not recognise. I sent the photo to pomgolian in NZ (who is related to me) to ask if she recognised anyone and she identified one as Harry Hampton - Knowing we are blues fans Pom jokingly said I am sorry to tell you this but that is Harry Hampton. However I didn't mind as he also played for Blues and England. I think the photo was taken in the 1930's so he was no longer playing by then.

These next three pics seem to have been removed from a book/books at sometime and then pasted into a scrapbook.I don't know their original source and do not intend any infringement of copyright. So If there is a problem, the site admin have my full permission to remove them.

That is a great story.

That is a great picture keegs and very interesting that the gym was once an aquarium. I can't help on when it was changed to the gym but I have found these two newspaper articles on the aquarium. The first one is dated January 14th 1879 and the second one - about the opening of the aquarium is dated July 5th 1879.

I've only ever watched one live professional football match - it was Aston Villa v Grimsby Town and the score was 3-3.
It was in 1947 so probably can be classed as 'near vintage'. A Google search pins it down to Sat 12 April 1947. Has anyone on the forum watched an earlier Villa match?
I was only little at the time and on the packed Witton end terrace I did not have a good viewpoint, so the crowd picked me up and passed me by hand overhead to a better place to watch !

I think that this photo has been posted on the forum once before, don't what year, but its pre 1900, a young James Cowan sitting far left as you look at the photo, Dennis Hodgetts sitting far right, Archie Hunter standing at the back with his bowler hat on, standing to his right is Jimmy Warner....AVFC%20edited[1]_edited.jpg

old mohawk, yes I can beat you, ! was born in 1930 and can remember my Dad taking me about Coronation year (1937) a local derby, cannot remember the score. I believe in them days of all standing local derbies saw gates of 70,000 and all standing together (no home and away sections) and no trouble. He took me few more times until the war started in 1939 and we never went again together after that as Dad lost interest when we moved to Shirley also in 1939. Eric

I have a few photo's of Villa Park being bulit as well, but they are on old newspapers and will not copy, shame because they are brilliant photo's, I am not sure if they were taken by an ex Villa player, along with a few photo's of local teams of that day....great photo Paulyx.....

Wonder if anyone can tell060.jpg062.jpg063.jpg me anything about this book. It seems to be about the history of Aston Villa. I have posted the cover , the first and think the last page of the book.
