Sorry Di, but to me it still looks as awful as ever. You would never guess Ive supported the Blues for the past 45 years would you ? Mind you, I guess there will be many folk around the world who are grateful you took the time to bother on their behalf, so for them I say THANK YOU. All the best. Barry.

Everyone to their own teams I say.... that's good. Most people know I am a Villa fan and my son Duncan bands together with a few keen Villa supporters out here on the West Coast of Canada...they bundle up newsletters and send them around to each other as well as keep in touch over the internet. I was in Brum when they started taking down the old Trinity Road stand and it was a very emotional time for those fans who were present that morning.

Villa Park is unrecognizable from the place I knew growing up. Thanks for the photo Di. I have seen the new stand. It's a shame that they had to take some more land to rebuild it. The stadium may not be called Villa Park in the future as there have been several rumours going around that the stadium will be renamed for a corporation who will pay the highest amount to have the stadium named after it. If that is the way forward then so be it. I don't think the fans will mind what it's called if the team win some championships with the money paid for the rights for outstanding players. It will always be Villa Park to me no matter what happens.

I'm afraid that rich organisations pouring money into a few teams will ruin soccer in Britain. The results of this activity can be seen right now with a few teams monopolizing the Premiership. Teams who will not have this vast and sustained input of funding will never be able to challenge and will eventually fall by the wayside. The net result will  inevitably be fewer teams along the lines of sport in the US and Canada because of the declining interest in the poorer clubs who will not be able to afford to attract the stars.
I always thought that the greater number of clubs in Britain spread across the country on a reasonably even ladder was much better than perpetually monied winners backed up by vast bank balances from the US and the USSR. How did communists become so rich anyway? The way I see it is unless you have a salary cap on clubs the competition is going to be compressed to a few and anything won merely on wealth will not be worth much anyway. The oppsition to a salary cap will say that the good players will all go to play abroad and therefore it will not work. So what. The more even competition at home would be more exciting for more supporters and with the larger number of competitive teams, there would be a greater number of up and coming young players moving through the ranks than would otherwise be the case with a possibly dwindling team base.
Please note that a salary cap is not on an individual salary but rather on the amount of money that can be spent on the team as a whole. If the minimum salary was increased also, it might work. The stars would still be paid more for a couple of years than most of us would earn in a lifetime and if they move on then so be it. When I was in Brum it seems to me that we were not that interested in soccer outside the country anyway. It was wether your team won it's division; was elevated or relegated and of course the FA cup competition. Being a Blues fan; beating the Villa was a bonus. When you have the situation that we have had in recent years with one monied team practically winning every game it played, I'm afraid the whole thing is a bore. Come to think of it we did not get many bonuses though. But the game was never over before it started

Up the Bules                             (Bules Rules)    The Liva are on toast.....er.. Next season....er...maybe.
Rupert

It all comes down to money it seems...for how long I'm not sure. I have my own opinions as Rupert as stated his. The salary amounts that the players are being signed up for in baseball in the USA just boggles the mind. In the NHL Hockey Leaque, Detroit spent a fortune on players before the salary cap rules came into effect and they didn't win the Stanley Cup.

When I said "so be it" in my opinion on this I really meant to say that the punters
don't have say no matter what. Whether you agree on this move or that move regarding administration matters not one hoot to the Associations and Management of teams.
When the National Hockey League in USA and Canada missed a whole year due to
salary cap concerns, the punters didn't seem to care. When it was "Game On" again after the strike the punters came back in ever growing numbers to rinks. The tally is down in some American states where ice hockey is not as popular as in other parts of the USA but here in Canada this reduction in fans just didn't happen.

I believe something similar would happen in Britain if the Football Association declared a strike along the same lines i.e. for salary reasons and it wouldn't make much dufference if the stadiums were to take on corporate identities in the future. Older punters will die off and if they did rename Villa Park and called it "Cadbury Park" for instance, the more recent
fans would simply know it as "Cadbury Park".

Jennyann, I don't know where the punting comes in. I thought that punting was done on a river with a pole in a punt with a nice young lady reclined up front looking back at you admiringly, hopefully. However I suppose if you do not handle your pole with skill  the admiring glance can quickly change to a frown. Anyway, what I wanted to say was that I admire the skill that is displayed in a good soccer game. The too and fro, euphoria and dissapointment. It has nothing to do with betting for me, it's just the game. I love it, or rather have loved it with a passion. Frankly sport or what passes for it in North America is CRAP commercialism and nothing more. In the 50s and 60s the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanly Cup I believe five years in a row. Which sounds fantastic until you realise that there were only six teams playing. The thinking was that because there were few teams the game was better because the teams had more players to choose from. Heck, they played each team 6 or more times a season. The same team was in town every second week or so... boring. Even now there are not that many more teams and the whole thing nearly came to an end a couple of years ago. Have not watched a hokey game since the strike; sick of it. I believe that if the soccer league goes down this path of foreign ownership and single team cash injections the game as a whole will suffer. Certainly the few fortunate teams will do well for a while but how long will that last. The supporters of other teams will loose interest. So what you will end up with is a Premiership division with a few stacked teams and the rest of the teams are merely there for them to beat up on.
Soccer is a great game. I was a regular player on two school teams, captain of one and played later in the industrial league on an occasional basis. I don't think that the Americans have anything to teach Britain about soccer. Or the Russians for that matter. They will only import inequality which will result in fewer teams in my humble opinion and in the meantime we will witness the continuance of the one sided affair that has been going on lately. I don't know; personally I would rather see more teams with a chance to win even if it means that we do not have Oceans Eleven.

I think I had better get off here, I don't think Di's post was meant to go here. Sorry.

I don't know why I wrote punters in my message. A punter in American football is actually the guy they bring out to kick the ball through the uprights(goal) after the play rewards a team with this option to increase the score, if the punter gets it through that is.. I know about punters on punts in the rivers also ) That's great as long as the punter doesn't hit a hole or get stuck in the mud on the river bottom (don't ask). Anyway, the word should read football fans although some of them could be bettors I suppose which is one of the main uses of the word punters when talking football or soccer. That's my last word on this as it sounds like gobbledykook.

Wonder where all this will end up. You have to be pretty patient to support
the Brummie teams over the last while if you want to catch a look at the FA Cup.
Hopefully, there will be good days ahead for both teams.

Jenny, I don't want to jinx them but the Bules are top of the first division (old second division) right now by a fair margin. Bules is my version of a rally cap.

I ,VE JUST BEEN READING SOME OF THE COMMENTS ON THE FORUM
AND THERE HAS BEEN SOME GOOD POINTS BEEN POINTED OUT ,
BY RUPERT , AND JENNY ABOUT WAGE SALARIES AND STRIKES IN THE ASSOCATION
I ALSO THINK IT WILL BE INEVETIBAL THAT IT WILL HAPPEN IT THE NOT SO DISTANCE FUTURE
AND IT WILL COME SOONER THAN YOU THINK
I ALSO AGREE THAT VILLA PARK WILL ALWAYS BE VILLA PARK IN MY EYES ,
BEING AN ASTONIAN BORN AND BRED LIKE OTHER
IT,S LIKE THE COCKNEY,S A TRUE COCKNEY , BORN BETWEEN THE BOW BELLS OF LONDON .
IF YOU ARE BORN IN ASTON , YOU ARE A TRUE BRUMMIE , BETWEEN SUMMER LANE AND IN BETWEEN THE CITY
I WAS BORN WITHIN THE MILE OF THE VILLA GROUND ,
AND MY WHOLE FAMILY OF GENERATIONS FROM WHEN THEY WAS FORMED
WAS AND STILL ARE VILLA FANS TODAY ,
I HAD A NEPEW WHO PLAYED FOR THE JUNINOR TEAM ,
AND THE GOOD OLD JOHNIE DIXON WHO PLAYED FOR VILLA IN DAYS GONE BYE
WHO PLAYED FOR PEANUTS IN THOSE DAYS , COMPARED TODAYS WAGES
USED TO DRIVE AND DELIVER AROUND THE SHOPS OF MY GRAND FATHER THE JELF,S.
TO DELIVER ALL THE CATERINGS AROUND B,HAM
TO SUPPLEMENT HIS WAGES OUT OF SEASON , WHEN NOT PLAYING .
GETTING BACK TO THE SUBJECT , ON THE LEAGUE ,
IN THE SIXTIES , WHEN WE HAD WORLD CUP GAMES ,
WHERE DID THEY CHOOSE TO PLAY CERTAIN FINALS , ? .
VILLA PARK OF COURSE AND WHY , CHOOSE VILLA GROUND
BECAUSE IT WAS THE BEST TURF AND GREEN , AND MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE GROUND CAPPACITY
AND IN THEM DAYS THEY HAD THE BIGGEST GROUND ,
AND THEY WAS TALKING ABOUT ALMALGATEING GROUNDS ,
BECAUSE THE LEAGUE THOUGHT ,THAT THERE WAS TWO MANY CLUBS
CLOSED TO EACH OTHER ,
AND SUGGESTIONS WAS , WHY NOT HAVE ONE GROUND
BUT FANS ,THOUGHT NO
THEN CAME THE PREMIER LEAGUE THE GIANTS , MAN .U. LIVERPOOL .
AND OTHER CLUBS
I AGREE WITH SOMBODY WHOM SAID ITS A MESS FOR WHAT VILLA DECIDED TO DO WITH THE
TUNNEL ACROSS THE ROAD
AND GETTING BACK ABOUT THE LEAGUE , I AM PRETTY CONFIDENT,
THAT AFEW YEARS FROM NOW IT WILL EVENTUALY TURN INTO A SUPER BOWL STADIAM
NOW THAT YANKEE RANDOLF, HAS TAKEN OVER , AND IT WILL BE CALLED SOMTHINK ELSE
HAS ONE AS SAID TO THE KIDS ,OR SHOULD WE SAY THE FANS OF TOMMORROW
WON,T KNOW THE DIFFERENTS AND THE YANKEE INVESTERS WILL PUT MONEY INTO IT
AND NOT BIRMINGHAM PEOPLE , AND THATS MY PREDICTION .
IT WILL BE A CRYING SHAME IF THAT HAPPENENS
ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION ; ON BEHALF OF MY BROTHER ,
HE WAS ONE OF THE ORINIONAL TEAM THAT PUT VILLA PARKS FLOOD LIGHT S IN
YESTER YEAR

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL , ASTONIAN .;;;

Sorry you are having probs, Pete. My email is on my profile, just click on my name on this message, and it will take you there.:)

Some photos of Villa Park from around 1978. North Stand is not long built, Holte End still has only half a roof and fences are installed around the terrace areas. Floodlights still have the "A" and "V" formations. BRMB, Ansells and Davenports still exist. Villa will be League and European champions within a few years. Happy days!!
