Das Blutbad – the blood bath. The consummate German designation of those murderous Battles of Somme….

During the last six months of 1916, over that part of French countryside, aptly named Santerre.(a contraction of the French words sang blood and terre land) the Allies suffered 620.000 casualties, including 24,029 Canadians all for a paltry gain of 10 kilometers………..

Four Victoria Crosses were awarded to Canadians: Thomas Wilkinson – Lionel Clarke – John Kerr and James Richardson –

They were all brave men that fought at the Battle of Somme
