Heres a pic of the hall.

The 1903 kellys , which would refer to 1903, shows it as Tilton road, and so does the Alan godfrey map. This is stated on the map as having had a revision in 1903. so change was between 1898 and 1903
Mike

On the 1901 census I have relatives that live in Tilton road. They are living at 87 Tilton road next to the School House, presumably Tilton Rd School. (RG 13/2864 page 17)

Went on to the site and agree they have got it wrong. All four thumbprints listed as 'Tilton Road School, Garrison Lane' are incorrect, but when you click on the thumbprint they come up as:
1. Icknield Street School.
2. Garrison Lane School.
3. Somerville Road School.
4. Barford Road School.

Irrespective of anything else, a big thank you for putting on that site, it is absolutely wonderful. I now have it listed on my 'favourites'.

Junie

Junie, I thought the site was strange but i knew you as a former pupil would know which school was which, pleased you are enjoying the photos. Len.

Thank you Len. I went to all the best schools. Garrison Lane until we were bombed out, then Ada Road until I was eleven and then to Tilton Road Senior Girls.

I cannot complain, they served me well through life and I had some wonderful teachers.

Junie.

Hey Lencops

At Tilton Road Seniors, I was in the same class of the sister of Susan Maughan (sadly my memory has gone and i can't remember her name, but i do remember going to her house and listening to her sisters record, 'Bobby's girl' before it was released :) and it became my favourite record because at the time, at 10 years old, i was in love with Bobby Clark, our next door neighbours son :)

I also went to Garrison Lane Nursery and remember doing a short play; about Hiawatha :) I also remember all the beds where we had to lie down and have a nap in the afternoon :)

We lived in the maisonettes on the corner of gordon street/wolseley street, opposite the Acorn Pub/Barwell Road - happy days they were :) :) we all played around the canal and got up to all sorts of innocent pranks. One Sunday a few of us got into Shakespeares metalworks in Barwell Road and climbed onto the roof, climbing up a mountain of metal shavings - once on the roof we had to be careful and walk across the beams. We were all there looking over into garrison lane park and someone saw us and shouted, so everyone ran back - they all remembered to run across the beams, but i didn't and fell through the roof into the gents toilets - had to climb out and explain to mom how i had cut my leg (i didn't tell her the whole truth naturally - well, i did tell her about 20 years later :).

We also all had a thriving business 'saving cars' when there was a match on at the blues ground. We would run up to anyone parking and ask 'save your car sir' and look after it waiting for the tip when they returned - some were lucky and would get to save a coach :) that meant a bigger tip.... we were all entrepeneurs eh :)

Living there was great - playing in the streets having lots of fun - i feel sorry for kids today, they haven't got the same freedom that we had.

The picture without the spire is Tilton Rd, difference is its all been painted white now ! even the wall around it.

Not sure about the other pic, but it aint Tilton Rd, might be Ada Rd.

Have you got mixed up with the first photograph? It looks like Garrison Lane School where I started on my 5th birthday.

Re: tilton road girls school

I went to Tilton Road between 66/67 until 1971. The headmistress was Mrs Harding, also one of the teachers was called Miss Passey I think she taught english.

Does anyone remember the gym teacher Miss Turner and the history teacher I can't think of her name though.

Re: tilton road girls school

Didnt tilton rd girls have to take it in turns to cook an evening meal for the Headmaster, who then ate it in a flat attached to the school.
All part of the home economics course ?

Cant see that happening now eh ?

Elecution lessons - in small heath..............Great stuff !

Re: tilton road girls school

Hi
I went to Tilton Rd girls from 1952 to 57, I dont remember cooking an evening meal for the headteacher, but I do remember half the cookery class had to go to Blumesbury Rd school in Neachells for their lessons for at least 1 term and another term we had to go to a big house in Bath Row and clean a different room each week untill we had our turn in the kitchen then we cooked a meal when we cleaned the bathroom we were alloud to have a bath if we wanted to, it was said that some teachers lived there and we had to cleaned for them. we were given the red tokens to use for the bus fare.I also remember the elecution lessons with Mrs Watts and I think Miss Shepard took R.E.

Regards Pat

Re: tilton road girls school

Hi pat yes I too cleaned at bath row and in our dinner hour we used to skip out to the el sombrero coffee bar on the horse fair also took cooking but at st benedicts rd school. I also remeber Miss shepard she was lovely and Mrs Watts Do you remember Mrs Frankish we had her for maths and needlework god I hated her and the feeling was mutual she was a bully, and our science teacher was Mrs Probert best looking teacher in the school. my teacher was Miss Saunders nice lady.....I was forever in trouble and got hauled up on stage by Miss Clissold for showing up the school my crime...I ran away from home with a friend of mine cos she was being abused by her father but of course it was all my fault I only went cos was scared of her going on her own. I have a lot of happy memories from there though.

Re: tilton road girls school

great to see the old pictures, yes great school i liked this school as it was really beutiful inside, i know it was old ,but when you think back the designe was very nice with balconies etc, i swear it was haunted though. my class was in the annex, terrible when it was raining all the way up the steps to the yard ,then into the anex classes.seperated from the main building .does anyone remember this.does anyone also remember the slide shows from cadburys they came to show the way chocolate was made. also the people in foreign country picking the cocoa beans .and then we were all given the purple tin with little chocolates in it ,was lovely to get these as there were loads in the tin ,and the slides were a facinating insite of how the other half live.

Re: tilton road girls school

Oh yes thats me Marjorie I remeber you well how are you I hope life has been good to you xx

Re: tilton road girls school

I was delighted to see this thread - it brings back all sorts of memories; I was also at Tilton Girls' from 1958-63 and I remember Mrs Watts very well. She taught us english and history, and she seemed ancient to me (I think I remember the blue hair!!) I think I was in love with her - because I can remember that suddenly, one day, what she was saying made sense ! & from then on I enjoyed her classes instead of dreading them. We were also invited for tea at her flat, so I guess she did it for each of the groups that she taught.

A few others I remember are Miss Clissold, the head, who was mainly interested in dancing & put on regular shows at the Town Hall - have to admit I loved that as well. (Mars and Shererazade as I recall, and one time I was a soldier - can't remember what the music was). The other teachers I can remember are - Mrs Probert, Mrs Shephard, Miss Saunders, Miss Sauvarin, and Miss Bowden who took us for shorthand & typing in the last year. It was a lovely old school hall, (great to have the photo); our classroom was in the annexe across the school yard & we had to troop from there occasionally to different rooms in the main building for the various classes. Never did learn to cook !

Regards to all Millie
