Pom

Thankyou Pom, It looks like my children are going to get a little knowledge of their family background after all. I should have asked more questions years ago. I have an 85 year old sister still in B'ham but like me, she didn't ask about family either. Thankyou once again for helping me Pom. John

I wonder if this Edward and Matilda's marriage miss-transcribed as 'Thompson':
Marriages Sep 1872
THOMPSON Edward Aston 6d392
Underwood Matilda Aston 6d392
It's the only one that I could find with names and dates that may fit.

You could ask if you wish to obtain the cert', because in most cases it should be correct on the original.

Hi Pom, this is the same Edward as the one on message-2. I have a certified copy of William's entry of birth. Showing mother as Matilda Thomason late Underwood formally Brierly. Whether they where truly married, I have no idea. They seemed to tell a lot of porkies in those days, Grin!
BTW my mother was a Taroni b. 1900 in the house in New John St. It's getting to be an even smaller world eh!
Regards, John

In that case that would be the ref' number for their marriage cert' miss- transcribed as I thought.
So yes they were married . LOL
Marriages Sep 1872
THOMPSON Edward Aston 6d392
Underwood Matilda Aston 6d392

Thanks again for your help Pom. We are looking into joining a Genealogy Society in a few weeks time. But first a short stay in hospital is on the cards. Then it will be full steam ahead. I think I have learned a big lesson concerning name spelling and will be ready for it in my future searches. Best wishes. John

Hi John here's something for you to ponder on while in Hospital ... The first marriage of Matilda... Look where it was!
Marriages Sep 1866
BRIERLEY Matilda Rotherham 9c 631
UNDERWOOD John Rotherham 9c 631
I also found a death for John Underwood.
Deaths Jun 1867
Underwood John aged 22 Rotherham 9c 292

One of these could be her birth, however to find out which one you would need to get one of the marriage cert's to find out her father's name and then ask for the birth with that name as the child's father.
Births Mar 1845
BRIERLEY Matilda Blackburn 21 43

Births Jun 1845
BRIERLEY Matilda Ashton &c 20 26

Births Sep 1846
Brierley Matilda Ashton L 20 193

(By the way John there were no Brierley's under your spelling 'Brierly' LOL)
