The Witton Arms gets very busy and very noisy on match days, being one of the rare pubs close to a football ground, that welcomes both home fans (on the left hand side) and away fans (on the right hand side). It did have a brief time during which it was named The Cap n Gown (in the 90s or 00s, I think). I guess that it does much of it's overall trade on these match days. Here are a couple of photos that show how they extend their available space both before and after games, by having covered areas outside.

The inquest of the Witton Explosion was opened at the Witton Arms on 13/12/1870. Five of the bodies were laid in an outhouse at the Witton Arms. Details of the explosion and victims also attached from the Illustrated Police News - so very sad, such young people.

Hi, I've just joined this brilliant website; my Great Grandfather Charles Manton was the Brewer/Licensed Victualler Manager at the Witton Arms for a good many years - was listed as such on 1901/1911 Census's. Previous he was at Woodman Inn Cregor Street. My Grandmother Charles' daughter Florence and son Harry also lived here. Florence married a barman who worked in the pub for them - name of Arthur Dudley. It is wonderful to see the original pub - thank you for posting this. If anyone knows anymore historically about the family - I'd love to hear and learn more.
