                               THE LAST TU'PENNY CRUSH

ON MANY A DAY DID I GO FORTH WITH GREAT DELIGHT,
TO RUN ERRANDS FOR MY MOTHER.
NO THOUGHT OF REWARD ENTERED MY YOUNG HEAD,
THOUGH ERRANDS FOR RECOMPENCE DID I EAGERLY RUN FOR ANOTHER.
WHO WOULD OFFER A COPPER COIN TO BE PLACE IN PROFFERED HAND,
TO BE COUNTED OUT AT THE PICTURE HOUSE WHERE IN WEEKLY QUEUE I DID STAND.

WITH JOY OF COUNTERNANCE AT THIS LOOKED FORWARD TREAT I SHARED WITH CHERRISHED FRIENDS,
WHEN AT HALF PAST THE HOUR OF TWELVE WE WOULD EAGERLY GO FORTH
TO WHERE THE PICTURE QUEUE ENDS.
WE WOULD CONVERSE WITH EACH OTHER IN EXCITED TONE OF VOICE,
AS WE SLOWLY, BUT SURLEY MOVED FORWARD, TO SEE THE HEROES OF OUR CHOICE.

TOM MIX AND BUCK JONES, FLASH GORDON AND TARZAN,
EACH HERO AND HEROIN HAVING THEIR YOUNG DEVOTED FAN.
THE PICTURE HOUSE THROBBED WITH THE MURMER OF VOICES,
AS OUR EYES FOLLOWED THE HANDS OF THE CLOCK,
AND AT LIGHTS DIMMINGWE GAVE FORTH IN UNISON A SHOUT OF HOORAH, HOORAY,
THAT THE VERY FOUNDATIONS OF THE PICTURE HOUSE DID ROCK.

"QUIET YOU KIDS" WOULD A VOICE SHOUT FROM THE BACK WHICH OVERRULED OUR CRY,
'TWAS THE VOICE OF OUR TORMENTOR, WHO'S WEEKLY DEMAND WOULD QUELL OUR
EXCITMENT TO A SOFT BREEZES SIGH.
WITH SOFTENED TONED VOICES WE VIEWED THE SCREEN,
AS OUR HERO'S CHASED AND FOUGHT VILLANS WITH GREAT LUST.
UNTIL OUR VOICES ROSE ONCE MORE IN TUMULTUOUS HOORAH'S AND HOORAY'S
AS INDIANS AND BADIES BIT THE PRARIE DUST,

AH, THE DAYS OF THE FLICKERS NOW SADLY GONE, AND CHILDREN NO LONGER MEET DOWN THE STREET
TO VIEW THE WEEKLY SERIAL OF HOPOLONG CASIDY WHO ALWAYS ASSURED US OF A VOICE RAIZING TREAT,
AS HE FOUGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF THE RANCHERS AND FAIR MAIDS.
YES ,ALAS ALL GONE, FOR THERE ARE NO MORE HOORAH'S OR HOORAY'S, AND THE MEMORY OF
MY HERO'S AT THE FLICKERS FAST IN MY MEMORY FADES.

PS. SOME OF MY POEMS HAVE NO SET FORM, BUT I HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY THEM.

MY REGARDS TO YOU ALL.

Re: POETRY

Nice one Bob, and welcome. O0
I had all those experiences. However, I can only surmise that you went to a posher tu'penny crush than the Winson Green Picture Palace - there all the little scallies would throw apple cores and orange peel at the screen when the woman appeared. :2funny: Come to think about it, I ain't changed that much. ^-^

I do think the kids of today have missed out on that wonderful communal atmosphere of the flicks. It can't be half as much fun sitting in front of yer own golly-box watching DVDs.

Let's hear some more off you. O0

Brings back wonderful memories of Saturday arvos at the flicks.
