SWORD FITTER FOR GUNS - Occupation in 1871.

Brummie On Exmoor

master brummie
I have a relative, George EDMUNDS, who working in the Gun trade in Birmingham from c1855. He was variously described as a Gun Maker and Gun Smith, until the 1871 Census. He then appeared, living in Summer Street, described as a "Sword Fitter for Guns". His 15 year-old son, Henry George, was similarly employed. George died soon afterwards, and Henry George went into the Bedstead business.

Please can anyone translate their interesting occupation? Was it actually about Bayonets rather than Swords? And where might they have been working?

Many thanks.

Jane
