my great grandfather was named edward oliver sutton born abt 1858 in birmingham. i have him with his wife (mary ann sanders) and his first son oliver on the 1881 census. i have his marr cert and his death certificate but cannot find his birth (looked on fiche at bham lib) nor is he on 1861 and 1871 censuses. i know his father was thomas from marr cert but thats all. can anyone help please? thanks chris:cry:

What was Edward Oliver Sutton,s age "given" on the cert
what was Mary Ann Sanders age on the cert,, sometimes the guy
"upped" his age if 1/ under 21,, 2/Bride a bit older,,
What address,s were stated, What was Both fathers names & occupations
Who were the witness,s,,(Relatives?) all these give pointers to search,,
Ok Chris,,repost with as much as you know include your 1881 census
ref,,just the Rg & numbers,, Then the Gang will crack on with you

Hi Christine, nice to see you here.

Looking through "Free BMD" I just put in the first names without a surname. There is a Edward Oliver Grove registered in the Dec Qtr of 1856. The reference is Birmingham 6d 70. It may be a long shot, but perhaps he was registered under the name Grove and then took on the name of his mothers husband. These things did (and still do) happen.

here is the info i have on marr cert 31st may 1879 at the parish church of st johns ladywood
edward oliver sutton full age of this parish father thomas sutton farmer

mary ann sanders full age of this parish father henry sanders jeweller

witnesses henry sanders and eliza sanders so no joy there

1881 census rg11 piece 3005 folio 126 page 38 line gsu roll 1341718
on ancestry as edward s sutton b 1856
his death certificate in 1908 says age 50 years.
