During the 60s, Holland decided or needed more land and a project was set up to reclaim land from The Zeider Zee. The project was started, and as the water levels dropped, aircraft started to appear from out of the sea. The dutch then started to investigate the crashed arcrafts, first to identify the aircraft and afterwards any airmen remains that were found aboard.

The flight path from England to bomb Germany took them across Holland and the Zieder Zee, where they would be attacked on the route to Germany and or on the return journey, causing them to crash in to the water.

The aircraft they found were British and American bombers and also German fighters. The work that The Dutch Airforce carried out gave a lot of release to a number of "Relatives" who had only known that their loved ones, brothers, fathers, uncles etc... who had only been listed as missing. Finally " Some of the missing would have a burial place".

The commentary by the late Leo McKern does it justice.
Please look at the site below, and please have a bit of patience with the adverts.
