  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

I have just discovered an ancester who was in the royal navy in 1843, his rank was sargeant at arms. anyone have any details of what he actually did. was this an officers rank? i want to try and see if i can get service records etc.

I think you will find he was the ships 'policeman'
An NCO rather than an officer and someone you would not want to argue with!
A Very respectable Petty Officer position.
our matelot members will no doubt explain more fully.
 
Master at Arms rank was akin to a SNCO, in the army and was responcible for good order and disapline on board ship
