Wonder if anyone can help with the meaning - 'Meriden Union' that appears on a birth certificate (1896) as the registration district?

The Union of Meriden 'Meriden Union' was an area of parishes covered by the 'Poor Laws' = The Workhouse and charities... All area's in England and Wales had these 'Unions'

Allesley (All Saints), Berkswell (St John the Baptist), Coleshill (St Peter and St Paul) and Condon (Holy Trinity) among other Hamlets and towns were all part of the on of 'Meriden Union'

Could you ancestor have been born in a Union Hospital in one of these areas...?

Thanks for your reply Pomgolian, good information. I wondered if it was something to do with what you have described. The place of birth stated is Marston Green, Bickenhill, R.D Many Thanks, Kat

Pomgolian - you mention some of the areas that would have been covered by Meriden. Do you know whether Sheldon would have come under Meriden around 1870-1880? I've a couple of people that I can't quite figure out which one is mine, Sheldon or Meriden.
