The Prodigal Brummie
Midlands Today featured a pub in Handsworth about to be sold. I didn't catch it's name, can anyone identify it?
1868 Kelly's lists a John Downes at the Red Lion Soho Street, Handsworth. Is this the name over the door in this photo? Is this the predecessor to the existing (albeit run-down) Red Lion Inn on Soho Road ? This card is for sale on eBay, no date given. The sign above the door seems to say the Red Lion Inn and underneath it “John .....” Perhaps we can bring to light some of the information in the late Peter Walker’s post #5.

Here are some further internal pictures from this Business Live link in 2014. The pictures were taken in By a Martin Mulaney in 1995. I dread to think what the inside looks like now.My ancestor John Downes was the licensed victualler 0n the 1871 and 1881 census. I am pleased to see pictures of the building.
totally agree with you viv but as we all know it will be a case of too little too late...i really hope i am wrong but i cant see this ever being a pub againShould be/Should have been protected for the wonderful examples of pub tiling alone. Such a lost opportunity if it's not properly preserved. Viv
This picture was taken 1 year ago by Baghal Singh. Do you think we would be allowed access to look, I think they may be using it to store stock.lovely photos janet thanks...looking at what it is being used for now i would think the interior is a total wreck now...the pub should have been saved years ago
