I was in that play as well. I was a Guard. Didn't have any lines though which was good.
Can you scan those pics or take pics of them and send them to me Pete, and any others that you may have from the old days.

Prince Albert Junior.

In my schooldays it was plain Albert Road, and we used to go there for cookery lessons (domestic science). I never made it to Domestic Goddess though.

My Father and his two brothers went to Albert Road School. I am not sure about his sisters. I have a photograph of my Uncle Frank who was on the football team. I'm not sure of the year but it's on a sign held by one of the team. I will have to dig it out. Dad used to tell us about the tricks they got up to on the way to and from school from Wyrely Road. Innocent stuff not vandalism like today. The area was so very different back in the Edwardian times and very country like all around.

Thanks for the pic Loisand, my resident photographer can't seem to get past pubs.
Sylvia, It changed from "Albert Rd" to "Prince Albert" while I was there. (never did understand it at the time).
Prnce Albert was one of the schools that used to make school dinners on the premises, so we got ours fresh. The food was delivered to other schools in the area in large aluminium containers like insulated suitcases.

Mr Ferret, is "Lawrences" outdoor still on the opposite corner? where certain nameless individuals used to 'borrow' the bottles from the back yard and take them in the front to get the 3d off them. Not the sort of scheme that I personally would be part of.......but I heard that it used to go on. I used to have to go and get Dad a jug of 'Nut Brown Ale" on Saturday night from there.

With reference to Dollyferretts photo of the swimming team;
The lad second from right at the back is, I am reasonably sure, Malcolm Perks.
I left Prince Albert in 1957 and remember amongst a lot of others
Calvin Richards, tragically drowned on a school trip to Austria, when at Birchfields school.
Robert Wellings; John Taylor; Bruce Parr; Peter Haden; Paul Evans; Rodney Broad and his lovely sister Susan;Doreen Jacobsen; Christine Woods; Barbara Smith. Colin Bennett; Derek Warren; Freddie Perks;Keith Potter? Eddie Faulkner; Diane Bent; etc
I had a crush on Mrs Dixon and went on to Birchfields and was taught by her husband. A great bloke though. Met Mr J.P Evans when my wife took up a teacing post at Prince Albert about 30 years ago. He still remembered me from his football team, notice it wasn't a recollection for academic expertise,
Dave

Colin my husband said was Calvin a young Black lad?. Hope I've put that with wanting to offend. He would have been three years younger than Pete. Jean.

Hi G G Jean
That's correct, he lived almos opposite where Pete lived in Witton Road. He was on of my best mates at the time, we often played chess round at my house and he was a really great lad.A lovely family all round. His garden backed onto my garden in Mansfield Road. He had an older brother Renny who flew piegons like my father, so they got on well also.
Dave

Dave that's why Pete hated our twins to go away with the school he's never forgoten it. He said a Mrs Teag was headmistress when he was there but he is almost four years older than us. Jean.

G G Jean
Who is this Colin fella? I remember Miss Teague well, she was awesome but underneth, I think she was o.k and my wife who worked for her said she was good. Ask Pete if he remembers Mr Rainsford, the school caretaker. Had to watch out for him when we wereplaying football after school and really shouldn't have been there and the great open air staicase which I am sure would warrant a risk assessment every minute of the day in this day and age.
Dave

Hi G.G.Jean again,
I was the same as Pete in not allowing our three lads to go on school trips until they were well into their teens. I wonder if there was anything in the newspapers, guess there must have been, but at that age I was sheltered from it.
Dave

Dave if you are on friends reunited you will find him on there. He is Mervins age and a very big bloke in both height and weight. I don't go on the site much but within ten minutes he came on and then an old friend via her brother in law. Just leave my profile on incase someone from the past wants to get in touch. Had a couple that I blocked. Pete has gone to bed so will pass on your message in the morning. Jean.

Dave when I started senior school there was a girl in my class by the name of Carol Narborough and when we returned from our summer holiday to go into our second year we were escorted straight into assembly. It was all very quiet [too quiet] when Miss Plant said she had something very sad to tell us. The above classmate had drowned trying to rescue her younger sister to no avail so we both had bad memories from our past regarding water. These things stay with you even to this day with myself. Jean.

Front row
Peter Haydn; Ronnie Holloway; Paul Evans; Bruce Parr; Alan Powell.

Are you out there guys?

Dave

Great photo Dave and glad you have one of poor Calvin. Was it his brother who played table tennis with John and yourself?. Jean.

Hi Jean.
No Renny was a few years older than Calvin and myself. The table tennis team was John, myself, Malcolm Phipps, Captain. and Danny Rees.
Other people from the youth club I recall are
Janet Mathews; Colin Sayers; Paul Hayward; Sue Skermer (later to marry Colin Sayers); Maggie Burbage or Burbidge, Sylvia Millington, Eddie Faulkner, super dancer; Vicar Yearsley popped in occasionally; Janets father was one of several adults that kept things running smoothly and safely.
Did anyone go to the Youth club behind the Methodist church at the top of Mansfield Road?
Dave

Some of the teachers I remember;
Miss Teague, Headmistress
Mr Neville, always seemed to have a brown briefcase, proper teachers one
Mr J.P Evans Looked after the football and cricket teams. Became headmaster after Miss teague retired. Good man.
Mr A.E Evans. Made the mistake of putting me by the window to the playground. Spent most of the time looking out the window dreaming of playing football for the Villa,
Mrs Dixon. Very nice teacher, had a bit of a schoolboy crush on her. Told me to stop being a Romeo when I pulled Susan Broads pigtail out. She grassed me up would you believe.
Mrs McGillycuddy. Lovely first year infants teacher.
Mrs Lewis, Infants teacher. Told my mother I had learning difficulties. At least someone got it right, my own students might say.
Cannot recall any more, though I am sure to have missed some.
I did not particularly like school, but that was because I would much rather have been at home playing in the garden, not at school, which I think, looking back, was not bad at all.
Dave

Dave was thinking last night about when you mentioned the Smith clan as I maybe researching that name. The odds of even knowing them let alone being married to one is one in a million [or almost]. Thanks for the forum someone else has got back in touch with an old friend from their past. Jean.
