This was on the "pineapple estate" (I can't remember why it was called that) in kings heath, well it was on the vicarage road, between kings heath and cotteridge.

I lived in Reeves Road, other roads nearby were Allens Croft, and Brandwood Road.

Great place for a childhood, lots of freedom and places to play.

Can anyone remember it, were you a neighbour?

This area was the end of the Vicarage road and the start of Fordhouse Lane. The pub close by was the hazelwell.

I live just down the road from Pineapple Road, the bridge over the railway runs across the Vicarage Road Fordhouse Lane junction. Then theres Allens Croft Road and Reeves Road, which are connected by Dawberry Fields Road. I have lived in this area over 20 years. I believe there are other postings on here referring to the brick works. Thr Hazelwell pub is still there as is the Red Lion on Vicarage Road.

Badger, do you remember the tunnel under the railway embankment by Fawley Grove running through to The Worthings, whilst researching for my website I found this tunnel was used as a air raid shelter during WW2, and 11 people were killed when a bomb was dropped there during an air raid on 9th April 1941.

Looks like its seen better days though.

Colin

Yes Colin, I do remember it. Must confess I didn't know about the air raid shelter bit. As I recall the tunnel comes out at the bottom of Allens Croft Road, opposite Pineapple school.

Do you remember the park halfway up allens croft and running through to reeves road, I don't think it's there now.

Hi astonian

I used to live right at the top of reeves road at No2, my brother married a girl from no 33, and I had lots of pals in the road. Know the Hazelwell well, we knew one of the kids from there and used to play in the "beer garden" climbing on top of the "gazebo thing" that used to be there.
Do you remember the area of waste land that was at the back of the hazelwell? another favourite playground of ours.

:)I lived in Benfield Crescent - off the Cartland Rd.It was an estate of Pre-fabs( Jerry-built i was told).I remember they all had large gardens, the idea being to encourage tennants to grow their own veg as the country were on rations after the war!Althogh they were a temporary dwelling my family lived there for 35 years.Does anybody remember the Rubber mill at the bottom of Newlands park.We used to go and beg for the rubber magnets they used to make.- Kevin.

Lappylugs

I remember the prefabs, there were also some at the bottom of Allens Croft Road.
The rubber mill was a favourite haunt of ours also, we would salvage the waste rubber brake blocks from the scrap pile and clean them up then sell them at school..................I should be a millionnaire Rodney!!:D

Sadly, The park is no more..

They built bungalows for the elderly on there - my garden backs on to it. very sad to see the park go as it was literally my back garden. The football matches we played in the 70/80's in there were so memorable.

True the park isn't there any more I drive past regularly. As a teenager I use to go to the park Allenscroft nursery was there before being relocated to Pineapple school which has now been demolished and replaced with a new construction now named Allenscroft School.

I used to court a girl ( early 70`s) Pamela Robinson - 46 Allens Croft Rd,her dad is still alive and living at the same address!Wow a small world.- Kevin

Anyone remember Piggy Lane and the Ash Path at the back of Pineapple School.
I played a few games of football for Pineapple School on Dawberry Fields.

My wife lived in the prefabs backing onto the playing fields down Brandwood park road leading into Allens croft, she attended the Pineapple school.
The bomb I was told never hit the bridge but landed near its entrance and the people died due to the blast wave.
She moved to Dawberry road after the prefabs were demolished, the community centre there used to have regular dances on with local live groups playing, The Rocking Meteors spring to mind.
Her parents moved back to the new houses at the bottom of Allens Croft opposite the calvery chapel, which was built on the best Newt pond ever.

I certainly do remember the Ash path and Piggy Lane. I remember Piggy lane used to get very boggy and flooded often. At school the teachers used to announce that it was flooded so those living in Dawberry Fields Road had to find a different way home. At that time (I'm going back to the late 60's / early 70's) the playing fields were fenced off with railings so you just could'nt walk across the grass. Of course now all the railings have gone and it is just open land.
I lived at the top end of Brandwood Park Road (Kelverdale Grove) so it was a fair trek to Pineapple school for a little lad. The 35 bus only used to run at certain times, and only between Kernthorpe Road and Kings' Heath.
I also remember the prefabs as Mum and Dad had friends that lived in Portway Road (Gone now of course but it was a little road that ran between BPR and Reaside Crescent - just about where the new Lifford Close ends) and I remember them being pulled down - shame really because they were lovely.
I have plenty more memories of Brandwood - maybe I'll post some more if anyone is interested.

Roland.

Fergie...Allens Croft Road and Reeves Road were not Connected by Dawberry Fields Road....but Dawberry Road

I remember it very well. Back in the late 60s and 70s they were the school playing fields and were fenced of with wrough iron railings. Piggy Lane between the ash path and Dawberry Fields Road used to flood quite badly. It's all common land now and the railings have gone.

Hi, I used to live at 327 Vicarage Road in the mid 1950’s to about 1960, when we had to move out due to the impending demolition of the prefabs. (A cluster of 6). Compared to the terraced house in Dawlish Road that we had moved from, our prefab was an absolute palace! It even had an Anderson shelter in the garden that I used as a den.
I was only about 6 or 7 years old and attended Colmore Road Infants and Junior School.
One of my favourite pastimes was to go train spotting at the Pineapple railway bridge where it adjoined Fordhouse Lane. I also used to run around with my mates in Reeves Road ‘Little Park', the waste ground at the end of Millbrook Close that ran up to the backs of the houses on Kings Road (and the ‘Radio’ factory), and of course around the fields at the top of the clay pit – sometimes actually down into the pit to catch newts and frogs in the ponds there.
There used to be a row of shops along the top of Allens Croft and the Pineapple Island. I can’t remember the Dry Cleaner’s name (Martins?), but this was next to The Hazelwell Fish & Chip Shop, Fred Wood’s Radio & TV shop, Sadlers newspapers, sweets, cigarettes etc, then a hardware shop, with a wool & knitting shop right at the end of the row. I used to love doing errands using my ‘soapbox’ trolley to call at one of these shops.
When I was about 11 or 12 years old I used to do a paper-round, collecting my newspapers from Adnams the Newsagents/Tobacconists that used to be on the corner of Allens Croft and Hill Croft Road. I think 12/6d a week was the best paying round that I did, but that was the morning and evening deliveries Mon-Sat, plus Sunday morning!
My mates and I also used to visit the rubber factory (Capon Heatons) at the bottom of the Fordrough to scavenge rubber brake blocks etc from the stuff that they chucked out. Occasionally we would also go to the Saturday morning ABC Minors shows at the Pavilion, or Savoy Cinemas – for 3 old pence you could scream your head off at the baddies for an hour or two! If we felt exceptionally bored we’d have an expedition to Lifford Lane ’Rezzer’ (Reservoir) or have a walk along the Grand Union cut by John Sturge’s limestone processing factory, where we would maybe try our luck at tiddler fishing.

Aaah – the good old days!!!

Great memories! I lived off Fordhouse Lane from 1954 and went to Pineapple School. Remember the Saturday morning "flicks" and trips to Lifford Reservoir. Spent hours at the tip nearby finding wheels for soapboxes - my DIY skills were never very good so they didn't last long - normally the end of the street before they collapsed! I remember highlight of the School Holidays was riding on the top deck of the Number 11 all the way around the outer circle route!!

I was married to a girl from Waldron's Moor and we had our reception in the community hall in Dawberry Road in March 1964. My Mother in Law was a Dinner Lady at Pineapple School.
