OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

This is not exactly a row of shops rather the remains, 206A Green Lane - 74, a fine GR post box and the nice van pulling out at the end of the row. Rather difficult to find anything else, the houses on the left have a fine balcony thing upstairs, no view but a nice balcony.

Green Lane maisonettes and the third shop along was Ann's hairdressers... I was a Saturday girl there.
The next street on the left Prince Albert Street.

272 Green Lane 1974 a bit further along the road, row of shops with hairdressers at each end - a quick glance and you would thing they were using the same pictures! Good old Ted Rogers - probably before 3-2-1, always looked uninviting, and the all in one pet store, like the dog portrait, and at the end a proper barbers pole. Above shop level we have a fine selection of sash windows and fine brickwork under the eaves. On the road there seems to be the same Ford escort from yesterday and a fine motorcycle but I have no idea which one.

Vanity Parlour... used to go there in the 60s

First up tonight we have 171 Holyhead Road in 1974 next to The Royal Oak, fine building built in 1907 on the left, with three shops, the pub has a fine M & B globe over the door and on the road a fine selection of vans.

View attachment 168100
I have frequented the Oak many times over the past 35 years.... Always , having a few beers before the match...
It is mainly used for away fans now , as it is the nearest pub now to the Hawthorns....

Finally for tonight a test , an industrial cobbled street, but where ? Fine arched leaded windows and the building on the end on the right seems to have writing on the white band, in black and white it would be almost Dickensian. Over to you

The same location in 2020. It looks like the pub frontage has been altered, but the roof and outer walls have been left in situ.

This is Speaking Stile Walk, Lee Bank, which no longer exists. The junction with Holloway Head is behind the photographer, and Irving Street is visible at the end of the street. At the end of Speaking Stile Walk is a white-painted wall, which says Wright & Platt, Ltd. The small, square sign by the entrance door (just visible) says "Offices." Wright & Platt were at nos. 45-53 Irving Street, and were Model Makers. The Unicorn Public House was situated at no. 132 Hollway Head, on the corner with Speaking Stile Walk.

What a wonderful name 'Speaking Stile Walk'... wonder how it came to be?

Back to the shops 94 Grove Lane Handsworth in1978, first a view above street level at the coping stones on the top of the roof the ornate eaves and the arched windows also the directions all the downpipe take to get to street level.
Next the shops, from the right a classic shop made for window shopping and pointing all the items you wanted and one of the bubble gum / toy machines which you put your penny in. Fish shop quite busy with the Pepsi sign and the edge of a newsagents / tobacconist which although only a part view has over 4 cigarette signs. Lastly the temporary bus stop, made from a split wheel rim I believe.

Still a fish and chip shop!!

Here we have 115 Wattville Road 1974, and a street scene that has everything, alleyways to the back of the houses, a pavement crossing to a factory entrance in the wall , who's main door has a little entrance door in it. Next is the local shop, Lyons Maid, Birds Eye and Green shield stamps amongst the adverts and then continue up the road with door window, window, door and a passageway, probably hasn't changed in years and a nice selection of cars too.

Not a shop in sight now

On a very wet day 1975 we have 128A Alcester Road Moseley, from the left is a Launderette, 5p to dry- really?, Church of Scientology down the side, next is a newsagent, with an awning and a nice little Walls ice-cream sign, closed down next to that is a shop or selection of little shops that seem to sell everything and finally on the right is part of the Village Store with its ornate shop sign. A variety of building styles and shop fronts.

Here we have a couple of distinctive shops, 134 - 136 Warwick Road from1974, did Sparkys have another shop?, I had seen adverts for them years ago and assumed it was a much larger building it doesn't look capable of holding Grand Pianos, next door is a tailors shop, seldom seen today. Everything above street level is ornate and the houses next door look very well kept

View attachment 167930
I had difficulty recognising this but the house to the left is 132.

Last up tonight I will throw in a colour slide, now this is a long lost scene and one that fascinated me when I was young if we were visiting Bingley Hall and walked down Broad Street. This little antiques shop down a side street with its window crammed with items and things attached to the frontage. To locate it I believe that is the Brasshouse Building to the left of the shop, Church long gone of course and we dont see telephone boxes these days either.

Thanks for looking

View attachment 167931
Had to resort to maps to place this today. Hope I have it about right. The Brasshouse would have been out of shot to the left.

This side by side shot may help

Bit damp this evening, first up 139 Bordesley Green 1974 a well kept row of shops from a bygone time, from the left a bicycle store offering wheels trued and rebuilt , good old Interflora - 20th October Grandma day - thought that was a modern thing, next the strange mix of drug store and Opticians, nice Ilford film window advert and a fine selection of bottles in the window, also note you can pop your films through the letterbox if you follow the arrow. Finally an electrical repair shop offering BBC2 aerials!!

The Naan shop is 133 and Toor is listed as 137

Now we are a bit more modern , 139 High Street Harborne 1980, seems the shops are in the process of rebuilding, first a building society/ solicitor/ estate agents, another building society, now part of Santander group, and a Travel agent, nothing much to add apart from pointing out the lady with standard uniform of sandals, carrier bag and handbag!

Older than you thought - it is actually 1807 but pub drastically altered. Have posted 2018 view for comparison.

171 Knightlow Road, Edgbaston from 1977, from the look of it a Sunday, good old Wine Sellers, the place to go for your drink of choice, not sure of the word Druggist but it was the word of choice then, note the leaded top to the window, the band od Kodak signs and Revlon in the panel of the leaded band. Fine selection of leaded windows and an Austin Maxi on the pavement. If you look over the bonnet you will see one of the child collection boxes - if i remember it usually had a title we would find inappropriate today.

This is a fine row of buildings - 201-209 Hagley Road 1975, reminds you of a posh row of buildings you see on the way into London. Three floors of Hagley Court, a quick google sees that 3 bed flats are £1500 per month !!, Back then a bit cheaper. Row of shops with Blinds down, a crusty sandwich shop, dry cleaners all looking tidy and well kept.

I remember the butchers as "Dicky Richards" from about 1950. Bert Shintons became a bike shop.
Sawdust was to stop anyone slipping on any fat on the floor and to keep it dry and clean.
I lived almost opposite in Junction Road.
