hope this one brings back memories for some of you. i certainly can remember going shopping all along newtown row with me mom.

wales.

What date would this photograph be? The shops to the right were demolished in order to build the Newtown bye-pass and shopping centre. I think the roads on the left are Burlington Street and Webster street, with the House that Jack Built in the distance (left)?

The building for sale on the immediate left could be where Woolworths was built?

I would say it is definitely mid 1950s, I can't remember when Woolworths was built but think it was about 1957, Griffins on the corner of Burlington Street and Newtown Row was closed and a good quality dress shop Lerose moved in. This was around 1959/60 when I moved into Burlington Street, anyone know the exact dates?

Pete, there was a newsagents called A.W. Mitchells, a couple of doors up from the Globe, I don't know about him selling toys, probably did in his later years there, he was done a few times for selling porn. He also had another shop next door to the Orient cinema.

just a little foot note. he had a shop for years just by the island by witton rd. its only been about 3 or 4 years since his name above the shop went.

Lerose had a factory in the Hockley area, making mainly Jersey wool clothes.

Alf, the newsagent next to the Bartons Arms was run by a family called Lambert in my time 1940/50s, and Pearl their daughter was in my class at Burlington Street School.

Nick, the Lerose you mention were the owners of the Lerose dress shop I mentioned in my earlier post, I think it was their first venture into retail shops. I went to the factory either late 1980s or early 1990s with a friend they were having a sale, it might have been a closing down sale, I bought a nice suit from there and my friend a couple of dresses. I also remember buying some Lerose dresses in a shop in Coventry in the 70s, they were always good quality and value.

HI - can someone please tell me the point where Newtown Row ended and High St Aston started - was it at the Bartons Arms / Potters Lane junction, or was it further up towards town by The House That Jack Built?

On this bit of map it looks like it may be by Asylum Road???

.
High Street begins at Six Ways aston and ends at asylum Road west side & Bracebridge Street on the east side. Newtown Row begins at this point and proceeds south towards Birmingham city centre, until Princip Street west side & Bagot Street east side.
