Here's another site for you to peruse:
https://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/AboutMusicHall.htm
As a matter of interest,a chap I work with asked me to look up his greatgrandfather etc for him,and I found out that he was a Professor of music and in the 1900's a Musical Director of some note! He composed many pieces to accompany the Silent Films and became involved as a composer and Director of many Musical Theatre plays of that era, including one that premiered at the Grand in Wolverhampton, about 1910.

Something else that may interest you,An Ernest Dyche opened up a photographic studio on the Coventry Road near to the Bordesley Palace Theatre in 1910. Dyche developed a specialised trade in theatrical portraiture, producing photographs of the music hall and variety turns who performed on the Birmingham stage.
Dyche trained his son, Malcolm (1921-1990), in the art of photographic portraiture, and for many years he worked alongside his father. In an effort to increase their trade, Malcolm photographed guests at dinners and social events in Birmingham, and together father and son promoted themselves as ‘Clubland and Theatrical Photographers.’
I think the original photos can be viewed at the Local Studies and History Department, Birmingham Central Library, Chamberlain Square, Birmingham B3 3HQ.,

Derek,

You've not been very specific about what you are looking for, but here's a couple to get you on your way that haven't been mentioned:-

https://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jassie/theatre/

Here you'll find 1851 & 1881 Census Extractions for theatrical & musical people. Also join the Theatre_UK Mailing List and ask your questions there - it's free and there are a lot of knowledgeable people on that list.

https://www.msheppard.com/tdeaths1.htm

I maintain the old Theatrical & Musical Deaths List here, although pressure from other interests means that I still have about another 500 to add when I can find the time. (I've already added 1400 entries to the original list which disappeared from the web some years ago).

For the last six years I have been researching Marie LONGMORE, the Victoria actress/singer, whose home theatre was the old Theatre Royal. She's distantly related to Sir John Major's circus ancestors and one of her sons was responsible for running a division of S.O.E. (Special Operations Executive), which liaised with the French Resistance in helping to getting escaped prisoners-of-war back to the UK during World War II. Once you start on this theatre research you never know what you will find! :D

Thanks so much Maurice

I am looking for a brother and sister, although not thought to be working together
Frederick Fellows bn 1857 birmingham and was a gun engraver, 1901 census says he was now a music hall agent !!
his Sister Ellen aka Nellie Fellows went to USA with her mum & 4 siblings 1885, not sure how many stayed but mother Phoebe and daughter Ellen did a lot of pond hopping it seems. Back here in 1891, 1901 both with daughter Phoebe Copson in Surrey, Clapham/Battersea. Then later that year 16/11/1901 back off to Massachusetts again, on board the ship Commonwealth. Ellen Professional singer 1901 / singer for ships list.
Just would like as we all would to know more about her / them. Any help very much appreciated. Derek

Hi Derek,

If they're working at all regularly in the UK, then probably a 24 hour subscription to "The Stage" is your best bet. There's quite a good search engine on it, so just set aside a bit of time and go for it! Prior to 1885, most theatrical entries were in "The Era" which is on the 19th Century Newspaper site (again pay-as-you-go) at https://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/

In the New York area the paper is the "New York Clipper", but there's none digitised that I know of and certainly not a complete set, just short runs in various university libraries. Good hunting! :D

In 1911,Frederick (widower) was living with son Frederick Charles,daughter-in-law Jane and grandson Frederick C in Everton,Liverpool. He is listed as Entertainer/Comedian. Son Frederick was a licensed victualler.

If it's of any use at all to anyone interested in Music Hall, My father was a percussionist who worked in the music halls etc. and I have a small collection of autographed photographs of a number of music hall artists that he worked with.
