Laptops - impproving battery life and performance.

.Charge and discharge a new laptop battery about 3 times. This allows it to calibrate correctly and you will get a more accurate battery reading.
.Buy laptops or new batteries with at least 6 cells- they hold a greater charge and thus last longer.
.Remove the battery when running from mains power (remember to have it charged for when it is needed!)
.Turn off everything you aren’t using. In particular Bluetooth and wireless.
.Turn down the brightness of the screen. Most laptops automatically dim the screen when on battery power, but tweak it if you can.
.Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery.
.Batteries with charge indicators (laptops) should be calibrated by applying a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges. (Leave the laptop on until the battery runs out- you will need to adjust your power management to prevent sleep or hibernation kicking in. I suggest setting up a ‘discharge’ option where nothing is set to switch off.)
.In between these full discharges it is better not to run the battery right down- nor to overcharge it. (Points 3 and 6).
.Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car etc.
.More memory (RAM). The laptop will not need to access the paging file on the hard drive so often, saving power. (Hard drives run on electrical motors- small but relatively power-hungry)
.Optical drives (CD, DVD) are power beasts. If you want to watch a DVD on the laptop, rip it to the hard drive first.
