This picture shows the interior of the grand hall at the opening of The Great Exhibition in 1851. The construction took a great deal of planning. It was housed in a massive canopy of steel and glass, the glass was produced by Chance Glass of Smethwick. The Crystal Palace, was based on Sir Joseph Paxton's gigantic conservatory at Chatsworth. The frame structure to hold the glass was produced by Fox Henderson and Company, London Works Smethwick. The Company also built the roof of the earlier New Street Station and similar works in Scotland. The company were also contractors for Trent Valley Railways. The trusses for the central aisle were raised with the help of huge cart-horses in January of 1851.
John henderson died on 4th January 1858 aged 47 he is buried in section K tomb 66 at Key Hill Cemetery.
