I thought I would post this new article from West Midlands Police history/museum site. Last time I put the post in the wrong place - I hope this is the correct place.
I would add that smallpox was an extremely serious disease with an exceptionally high mortality rate. Isolation hospitals were strategically placed and quarantine restrictions were no going out at all!
