Hydraulic ram at Elmdon

A hydraulic ram is a water pump powered by water. With a combination of one-way valves, it is able to use the energy from the flow of water to pump it to a higher lever than the head of water it uses. They were quite common, with a lot of them marked on ordinance survey maps but not many in use now. You often find them below dammed lakes and weirs for pumping water to farms and large houses.

When running they sound like a heartbeat
