Henry Garner

“Started in 1914 by Henry Garner in Moseley, Birmingham the firm were importing some American-built trucks, but sold in this country under his own name, which grew to cover a range from 1% to 6ton. The first British-built Garner was not produced until 1925, when a 2ton model with a 24.8hp Dorman engine appeared.
New premises at Tyseley Birmingham] enabled production to be increased and a 1½ ton and 1¾ton chassis were placed on the market. However from 1931 they concentrated on heavier models and were taken over by Sentinel in 1933, then were resold to the Dodge organisation, before becoming independent again in 1937.
A few 2ton models were then produced, but the company ceased vehicle production completely at the outbreak of the war in 1939.”

typical Garner vehicle of the late 1920s and early 1930s. This JO model is for a 3ton payload and has a four-cylinder 24.8ho eneine. The body is 17f long, by 7f wide and 7ft high.

The second phase of Garner vehicles from 1937 produced new and up to date cab desion. This 40/50cw lorry has a six cylinder 27. 3hp petrol engine developino 65BHF. Fitted with Lockheed hydraulic brakes.

Just been researching shops etc in Moseley Village. Moseley Motor Works was founded on on Alcester Road in 1907 by Herbert Graham. It was bought out the following year by Henry Garner. Here's a time line from Graces Guide:

1907 Moseley Motor Works commenced business.
1909 Name changed to Henry Garner Ltd.
1913 April. Advert for a the Garner Carburettor. [1]

1925 Opened a new works on Kings Road, Tyseley and commenced building a lorry of own design
1927 Name changed to Garner Motors Ltd.
1931 Introduced a new range of lorries with forward-control
1933 The company was merged with Sentinel and the 4JO was produced at the Shrewsbury works until 1936.
1938 Company sold to a consortium of ex-Dodge employees who set up at Willesden

According to The Moseley Society website the Moseley Motor Works was situated at 124 Alcester Road in 1907 - possibly the works was behind the shops up the alley way that used to be there? Companies House listed them at 120/122.
