Is it the Pudding and Pint Lyn?. Always was a lot of trouble there police outside most times we passed it. Maybe they will still sell beer suppose we will have to hang on and see. Jean.

Good morning lynn
its good news that the hare as closed down it was a breathing ground
for crims and gangsters and druggies it was a pub with what we call
with chequerd history over the years
and the police wanted to close it down for years. that i do know
and it was a private enterprize owned by a guy whom owns
three other pubs in sutton cold field whom is name is i will not
reveal nor is other pubs , even thou he owns these pubs
he cannot hold a licence his self to run these pubs
and the only way they can operate is by appointing a manager
and the manager as to be a special manager whom can handle it
a tough person with back bone and with connections .--
if you get my drift ; and the sutton police licenceing officier
decides whom is capaple of running it because it was and been a very hard pub to run and you have to be a special person to handle it
because of the number of shooting and other things that hve taken place over the years gone bye
i was to take this pub on afew years ago and granted the licence
by sutton , because of my history of running such hard pubs
and my connections and theback which was needed
any way cutting the story short it was as i have said i decided over the week end to throw the licence in and never opened it
on the monday morning as plamnned so the owner could not open the pub as he thought as i turned the licence down very much to his
disa pointment . the king standing circle will be following next
on the list of closure which as taken over from the hare
thats why i said it was good that it finaly gone once and for all
it is sad that our pubs are falling and closing rapidly but there is alot
of a hell lotof pubs that have been a decade of decay and corruption
with in the city ans the police are slowly winning the battle
on these badly run gangester pubs and beleive me there are alot of them around i could reeel alot of them off to you but i would be all day
lynn enjoy your day at webbs which i am sure you will
food is good but a little steep on prices
i do not live to far from there myself and i buy all my plants
from there and they are now stocked out with a wonderful array of christmas stock
best wishes astonion ;;

morning jean..yes thats the one...

morning astonian..must say ive lived only a two min walk from this pub for past ten years and have been in only once if memory serves me...but as you say its now a sign of the times...the great british boozer is slowly deminishing in front of our very eyes... didnt realise that you live close to biddle and webbs....sounds like you will have a good show of plants this winter...:)

catch you all later..

have a good day...:)

My Uncle Bill and Aunty Elsie were licencees there in 60's. Some good nights there, family parties etc and a bowling green. brfore that they had the Crown in Aston.

Not on Elsie's side (My family) don't know about Bill Whose name was Edmunds. Elsie had two girls both alive one in Kingstanding one in Shropshire

it was a rough house when i went there o ver 20 years ago

Mossy:1019:

The king charles on the kings road also had the same sort of reputation as the old hare and hounds, that went a few years ago,a very rough pub indeed.iIts a great shame about both the villa tavern and the yew tree, where next i wonder?

hi lynn
first of all am i right in saying the yew tree we was speaking about
was on the island at witton ? and it laid back off the rd
because i can recall a gaffer there ,whom was a tall slim guy and he
drove a little 4x4 car i cannot just recall his name at the moment
but he got the sack for breaking all the rules of the trade
by giving is ale away on the tick , [never never] to a certain click
this would have been around the seventies, in fact loads of people
and they was all on the dole in receipts of there giros
as it was in them days given ,
and also this crew also used to use the aston hotel
across the rd and every lunch time these guys would come to the
aston and hand over there giro,s to the gaffer for there credits
so they could get another weeks ale,
but the poor man as he was silly ,stood the three card trick
and it cost him is lively hood and his job
i may add this was long before the present day owners ,as i know them
personally at the aston hotel
thats my memories of knowledge of those pubs
incidently ; did you enjoy your day at webbs ,?,
did you buy plants or the christmas deco,
they are fantascic are,nt they ? ,
i shall be popping along myself this week to get my winter plants
and i dare say i will have to take the old dutchess to get her
christmas deco,s like every year for the last decade
speak to you again lynn best wishes astonion ;;;

Alan, no the Yew Tree is opposite the river Thame. You go under the bridge past the IMI and follow on a little way and it is on the right. It is in Thame road where Shera came from. Hope this will help. Take care. Jean.

hi jean
how are you and pete , fine i hope ?,
many thanks for putting me right jean i completely forgot thats where it was
and my mistake its been many years down there its the one with the bus stop outside it ewas a very nice little pub
jean can you correct me and put me right,by telling me the name of the one i was on about
it was almost facing the little club on the corner across the rd
have you seen sandra lately should you speak to her give her my regards
alan ;;

Alan will put my thinking cap on and ask Pete at the same time. San has had the dreaded lergi but will keep you in touch. Regards. Jean.

Alan Pete said there was the Aston Arms and the Witton Hotel. Do you mean the upstairs club above the co op only I did tap dancing there and got kicked out for fighting:rolleyes:. They had other social events too. Bye. Jean.

hi jean
thanks for getting back to us tell pete it was the one on the oppersite side of the rd walking up to the island at witton , i think it was the witton pub most definately
i hope pete can clarify this one for us
as i said they both done it on the card but the one got the boot from the pub ,
i may add that one of the clients was a fairly known boxer on the circuit
whom was also responible , can,nt mention names as you know
but it was the witton one for certainty i can visulize him now and is motor
he was a gentle guy whom put to much faith in the human race
and i think it was is first boozer ,tell peter thanks ;;;;

hareandhounds was a rough pub i know i live just round the corner king charles was the same glad they gone but shame all our pubs are closing anyone remember the london tavern at saltley gate ?

hi Jacko
if i remember correctly that pub used to be more or less facing crawford st and it used to be on the main rd
where there is a exit into the saltley trading estate now
and if you walked from the saltley gate pub
towards crawford street and then cross the main rd it was there
unfortunealy i just cannot remember the little shops that it was by
but i do think there was some kind of decorating shop along side it
best wishes astonian ;;;

The pub on Witton Island is called "The Cap and Gown" nowadays. It used to be the "Witton Arms". It's a nice looking building and is popular with
"away" footie fans when the Villa play whomever.

I used to work right opposite the Hare and Hounds Kingstanding rd, in about '77-80 at the Total petrol station
so some of us used to go for a drink after the early morning shift, and when it [the petrol station] began to close at 10pm instead of 11pm
it was an ok pub then

Marion it later became the pudding and pint then closed down and is going to re-open shortly and will fill you in when it does. Hope they have bouncers on the door as they will need it if the same people use it. Always police cars outside. Jean.

Leornard did they have a relative by the name of Ruby Yeuldon by any chance?. Jean.

Jean, Ruby Youlden was my my mothers aunt who was married to her Uncle John.
Bren on this site should be able to update you more.

My mother and father John And Joan Buck used to run the pub around 1971-1981. I'm one of their twin children. :0)

Hi Marc and thanks for that. I have indeed caught up with Bren and looked through some lovely photo's of his mom Ruby who was also my mom friend. Jean.
