Brummie yes ! Novice no !
The 'then' pictures are taken from old postcards, the 'now' pictures taken from Google Streetview.
The older pictures date from 1910 and 1915.

Another of Church Lane - featuring the cottages, I'm not sure where they stood, maybe someone can enlighten us . The picture dates from 1908.

Looking at the early maps, there seems to be only one palce where a row of cottages were. This would make them about opposte where Handsworth Wood girls school now is.

I wonder Y that'll be, He he he. Your quite right - not sure I like the elongated R's either.
