Can any one tell me what a gimlet maker was please?

A gimlet is a tool for making holes in wood

so you can take your pick,think it refers to the tool maker though.

Many thanks Colin. I thought that was it but you never know with old words
something I need to find out as well as my ancestor was an auger & gimlet maker in 1810 ish. I beleive the auger was an agricultural implement.

Or post holes but more likely the answer that Colin indicated at that time.
