Frustrated

Mr Zippy

master brummie
Hi,

I am becoming increasingly frustrated in being unable to trace two of my female ancestors from 1800s Birmingham using online resources. I know the last census record they appear on with their parents (1851 and 1881 respectively), but in spite of many years searching Ancestry, FreeBMD (which is supposed to be complete) and IGD I have been unable trace any death or marriage records, or indeed any records at all. Is it likely that I need to visit the Library of Birmingham to use the parish records there or are online records fairly complete? Or should I perhaps resign myself to the fact that the marriage records I need are missing.

Carolina, yes over the years I have, but no harm in listing it again:-

1. Ann Moseley
Born 31 August 1838 in Aston - mother Ann, father Joseph
Last census entry 1851 - Howe Street
(This is not the Ann Moseley who married Thomas Hunt in 1856)

2. Elizabeth Moseley
Born 4 May 1872 in Birmingham - mother Mary Ann, father Rowland
Last census record 1881 - Brearley Street West

There's a Hannah Moseley b. Birmingham 1838, a servant on the 1861 and a few other Census's up to 1911, might be worth looking into as I cant find a birth for that name.
Lynne.

i suppose you've seen the marriage of an elizabeth moseley to joseph perry in 1895. father is listed as john (deceased) though. date of birth for elizabeth is correct 1872. on "birmingham england marriages and banns on ancestry" she is transcribed as elizabeth moreley.

the same elizabeth moseley is on the 1891 census aged 19 with mother ann (widow) , brother arthur aged 15. and a boarder named joseph perry aged 20, so this was probably elizabeths husband to be.
sorry if you already looked at this one.

Yes, the Joseph Perry lead looked promising, but alas nothing else adds up. Elizabeth's father lived until 1915, while her mother died in 1895. The family headed by Ann is entirely separate. On the Hannah Moseley possibility, I did wonder whether she may have left home to work as opposed to getting married, but not sure on the name. Also, as is pointed out here, the name Moseley does unfortunately get transcribed incorrectly quite often.

There is a death in 1909 for an Ann Moseley born 1839.

Also one in Kings Norton in 1882 (born 1838).

Janice

Hi Janice

Yes, I know that one. The other two possibilities for Ann are interesting; it is though a bit difficult to verify because if she remained single until her death in 1882 I would havbe expected to find her on earlier census records

There is a marriage in 1865 of an Anne Marie Moseley father is given as Joseph a brass founder. Her age is wrong and I am not sure why she is not on the 1861 census but it is another possibility. The marriage is at All Saints on July 23rd. Address for bride and groom is Park Road.

They seem to be on the 1871 census with a son George aged 4 - address Gt Hampton Street. Her occupation is the same as on the marriage certificate.

Janice

Interesting though, particularly as the 1841 and 1851 census records for Joseph Moseleys in Birmingham do not identify a daughter named Anne, apart from my ancester,
