Duck8 Smoke Box number plate?

Hi, Think we all remember the duck8's from Aston/Bescot sheds referred to G2 or G2A. Can anybody explain why there was no smoke box number plate fitted?

Mike.

Hi Mike :)
The generally accepted reason for them not having number plates on the smokebox is because the smokebox doors were of a thinner metal (or maybe a different metal?) than normally used and it was found that the area around the holding bolts would sometimes 'burn through' under certain hardworking conditions.
The G2/G2As were not the only ones that this applied to, there were other classes the same - usually those with smokebox doors retained by a ring of bolted clips, rather than the more normal central double-handle.
Sorry I can't be more precise, but hope this helps!

bets regards, Dave
