Hi Bernie and many thanks for the geography lesson - I remembered what a fool I had made of myself a couple of hours after I posted the reply'.
But here is another question to which I would like an answer if possible.
Anyone remember the Faggot and Pea shop - somewhere near the 53/54 bus stop before Victoria Street if you were coming from Alston Rd though on the other side of the road? Did it have a name??
I remember going with my mother for faggots and peas which were put into a jug which was put into her shopping bag.
We got on the bus to go home and had to stand up as it was full.
The bus pulled up very fast and some poor devils down the front ended up wearing our dinner and we had to go back for more!!

Hi Bernilew.

I went to the Victoria Street Baptist Street Church for 10 years. It definitely was not Elim. It was near the No. 8 bus stop and over the road was a dress maker who seemed to specialise in bridal wear. She used to make big ribbons with the left over satin which mum bought for my plaits and ringlets.

No. definately not Elim. I have no idea where the elim church was. Marie
I remember that dresmaker had a black dress made for a xmas party when I was 16
there was also a hairdressers next door

Most of my mates were from that area, Terry Harrison, Danny Canning, Dougie Blackham, Jimmy Worrall, Dougie Carter,a guy called Fido, lived in the flats in victoria St, Kerry Hannigan, the list is endless.
Ahh memories.

Hi there. I remember Danny Canning and some of the other names you recalled.I lived at 69 Carlton Rd. and then 110 Palace Rd. and my name Tom Griffin.

My sister lives in Blake Lane. She bought the house about twenty three years ago and has never wanted to leave.

My aunt and uncle lived in Botha Rd for several years until following their children out to Tamworth.I used to love visting and playing with the local kids on the street.Although I was only visting I was accepted no problem.Happy Days.Sadly can not remember any of the kids names.

Think I would have remembered playing with Tom Cruise.

I used to vist the Wynn family.

Anyone tell me if the Avenue Pub, is still standing, I used to play for a football team from there, back in the 70s.

Hiya John. I don't know who ran the pub the pub when I used to go there, But the footaball team was called Ritz Rangers. Ring any bells?

Olton MPW

The shop that sold faggots and peas on Bordesley Green was Hydes. It was between Carlton Road and Victoria Street a door or two from Corbetts the greengrocers. Hydes sold all sorts of cooked meats also.

Old Boy

I remember Hydes the cooked meat shop, their faggots were the best iv'e ever tasted, the only ones that ever came close were some i used to get recently from Walter Smiths on Coventry Rd. Sheldon.

Thanks to those who gave me the name Hydes for the faggot and pea shop. It rings no bells so I guess I never knew the name. I can smell and taste the faggots even now but will have to make do with Brains the next time I am in England.
Good luck to you all.

Welcome Brummiegaffer. If you go to the top of the page, and click SEARCH, it will throw up all links on the site to Bordesley. Maybe even the odd picture or so. From an ex Bordesley born lad. Barry.

Thanx for the welcome Barry I se you are also in Scotland now

Brummiegaffer,

When were you born? My Aunt and Uncle, Emma and Arthur Boswell lived on Bodesley Green opposite the police station almost throughout their married lives. From memory I think their house was No 235.

They had two daughters Gertrude and Elsie. Gertie married Syd Owen who played football for B'ham City and later Luton Town and Leeds Utd. I cannot remember who Elsie married.

Do you remember any of them or was it before your time?

Old Boy

HI
Yes I remember them very well i was a young boy then and I lived at 239
I often used to meet Syd when he came to visit them and in fact I still have an autograph signed to Paul from Syd Owen when he played for Luton Town
If my memory serves me well Elsies husband was Les Its so good to hear from people of my childhood days

Thanx for getting in touch

Regards Paul
