Second City: Birmingham and the Forging of Modern Britain by Richard Vinen. He is professor of history at King’s College London and a native of Birmingham.
This book was reviewed in last week’s FT.
 
Richard Vinen was a guest on Start The Week (Radio 4) this morning contributing to a programme devoted to Birmingham. It's a good listen:
Just finished listening. Lots of interesting experiences and thoughts about Brum. Confirmation of my own thoughts about how we lived in our own little area and how we were denied the knowledge of our own history. Well worth taking the time to listen.
