"Black Horse", Park Lane, Aston.

Proud to be a Brummie !!
I wonder if there is anyone on the site who has information regarding "The Black Horse", Park Lane, Aston ???

On the 1871 Census: The landlord was JOHN REDDING, 51, Retail Brewer b Haselor. His wife was Hannah Redding. John is no longer in the Pub by the 1881 census. So my interest lies with his time in the "Black Horse".....Can anyone help ????

Regards,
Margaret.

Looking at the directories this is a little mystifying. In the directories immediately around this time Park Lane is not numbered, though the buildings are listed consecutively. there is no john Redding listed in the street in 1868, 1872, 1873 or 1876. Early directories were often a couple of years out of date, but this should cover the period around 1871. One would think that possibly he was justb there for a year that was not listed in these directories. However, unless the Black Horse name changed to another pub in Park Lane before 1930 (when it is named in the electoral roll as np 78, then it would appear that the Black Horse was listed under Mrs Elizabeth Eyre in all the above directories. I would think this would mean that John ran and lived in the pub, but it was owned and controlled by Elizabeth Eyre. this doesn't give you any more information, but does stop you wasting your time with directories

Thank you Mike...this chap did seem to be a fish out of water in a pub! He was by trade a sawyer/carpenter & joiner & by the 1881 census he is listed as a builder, but it is definately him & his wife who are living in the Black Horse in 1871....he just wanted to keep me confused !!!! Thank you for your help (as always).

Margaret.
