  • HI folks the server that hosts the site completely died including the Hdd's and backups.
    Luckily i create an offsite backup once a week! this has now been restored so we have lost a few days posts.
    im still fixing things at the moment so bear with me and im still working on all images 90% are fine the others im working on now
    we are now using a backup solution

There was The Crusader in Broad Street. It was a strange place, seem to remember a punchbag?
 
Yes that's the one, Thanks Phil, on the corner of Auchinleck Square. We used to walk through the Shoppng Centre to reach it from Broad Street. I liked those little shops, I think one was called "The Bodkin"!
 
hi astonb6..many apologies i have accidentely deleted the link you posted of the song spirit in the sky so could you re post it please...that song and also the house of the rising sun is in my opinion 2 of the greatest songs ever..songs like that will always be remembered and will always be played..just my opinion of course...also loved sugar sugar..nice happy jolly song

Lyn did you know music shops ie places like George Clay etc used to have a top 10 of things you could not play . That was of course if you went into purchase a guitar . House of The Rising Sun was the most practised/played , that's why a lot of music
shops put it at number one that you couldn't practise it , I suppose the main reason was a lot of wannabees couldn't play or strum it properly
 
Can anyone recall the name of that M&B house that was close to the recently demolished library , when you looked out of the window you could see The Hall of Memory and Baskerville House . Another Pub that's gone The Greyhound on Holloway Head cider house
 
Lynn totally agree with you.
Great band The Animals. Eric Burdens great gravelly Geordie voice, so soulful. Hope the neighbours don't mind me playing it at full blast. Volume number 11.:)

If it was the old Woodman in Easy Row Mike , it wasn't that pub I was referring to. This pub was just under the library that recently got demolished it was built either late 60's early 70's

Hi Astonb6,

Speaking of the Cabin, I always remember a young blonde haired barmaid who worked there in the early 70's who used to wear hotpants at the time, I think her name was Carol.

Other local pubs I recall in the Newtown area of Brum: Brown Jug, The Pelican, The Woodman, The White House, The Lord Clifton, The Gunmakers Arms, White Horse Cellars (live jazz at the weekend) and no doubt many others I've missed.

Hi Astoness,

I couldn't agree more, it must seem like we were all alcoholics but, nothing could be further from the truth. They were there to serve the community, where old and young frequently mixed & happily socialised together in the local for say a game of darts or dominoes and a bit of friendly banter. Sadly though, as you quite rightly say these are just a distant memory but, they still provide some very fond memories of happier times.

H willstreeter did you ever get to the old blue lamp pub across the road from the old summer lane police station i beleive at some point in the early seventy it either closed down or it changed it name for a short period then closed down it was there for donkeys years i lived in the tower block they first built above the newtown precint top floor on the rear side

Astonian It was called The Lamplighter when I went in there
 
H Will i do stand corrected on that you are quite correct what i was thinking it was a blue lamp outside but yes it was the lamplighter and cos of the police station across the road i recon that they put a blue shade on it but the lettering wasb white thanks for correcting me on that
 
same here i only ever knew it as the lamplighter built in the 1960s i think..i was using it in 1971 and 2...its still there but no longer pub for a few years now inside if memory serves me correct it had the olympic rings on the wall inside the pub...maybe thats why it was called the lamplighter..

Yes it was Lyn spent a night or two in there also.was One of the gaffers there was a big Irish woman named Bridie .Just before it closed it was kept by an Irish bloke named Jim . The Paddock next door was owned by Tommy Swords an Irishman
who came from County Offley , when The Paddock close he took over The Colmore Bar in Gt Colmore St
