OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Finally for today - an old Geoff Thompson picture, year open to suggestion - St Georges fish and chips saloon, with a sign in the window saying Roe. Nice selection of signs next door and interesting wooden support to the end wall - any additions greatly appreciated.

Don’t think it’s College Road John, from memory, in Brookvale Road you would turn left into the Ridgeway, up the side of the Cemetery, then eventually get to College Road. Might be a few more stops on the bus. Think Tates might be right., but we are talking sixties. I used the number 5 bus. Regards Sue
If you're approaching Moor Lane with the Cemetery on your left then you can't be on Brookvale Rd, John.

Another garage to get your teeth into this is Golden Hillock Service Station in 1972, quadruple Green shield stamps, Amoco petrol - Amoco merged with British Petroleum in December 1998, self service which was an Amoco innovation, and a fine selection of cars.

Golden Hillock Service Station 2- 72.jpg

466 - 476 Coventry Road 1969, interesting selection of posters on the fence and an important one - Dave Swarbrick, soon after this joined Fairport Convention so perhaps one of his last solo concerts, also note Martin Carthy got an MBE for service to music!! also on offer is bingo and wrestling and a painted sign on the newsagents wall. 466 - 476 Coventry Road - 69.jpg

NOF is a Ford Corsair 2000E, the estate car behind it looks very odd but may be an 1100/1300 BMC, then Escort, Herald, Toyota, Ford Zephyr 6, and a Mini pickup.

Today we start with 360 Holyhead Road in 1975, nice row of terraces, the Indian Centre with its Double Diamond sign at the start, and E Jones at the other end. Austin Maxi on the road and a lovely Mini Van turning onto the road.

Still there but the houses now all seem to be shops.

Was there another "Shirley Temple" on the Stratford Rd. near "The Saracen's Head".
It was in the block just a bit down from the Saracen's Head (same block as Woolworth). You could eat in there - I think the one at Robin Hood Island was mainly take-away. Closed down in about 2015.

Not sure exactly where this was on Golden Hillock Road. There are a couple of possibilities.

V F Harrison - the newsagent's was 476. Today that is occupied by TCC accident management. The hoardings have been replaced with new shops.

This is not strictly a garage its 160 Handsworth New Road in 1977 but there seem to be repairs going on . Cortina with a battered front and a tired MG. Will not make a guess on the rest but the White Escort looks nice. No boxes here.

Interesting shape to the building where the step ladders are and a nice view down to the Church - for the smokers among you try not to look at the price of cigarettes.

Finally for today 248 Bordesley Green 1971, firstly the man up the ladder with the sign, think he is tidying it up, next the cars on the forecourt - won't name them my nerve has gone !! A busy street and note the cobbled drop downs to the road.
