Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

Thanks Mal, I must be wrong. I left Handsworth in 1956 but did regularly go back to see a friend, so maybe I am confused (nothing surprising there!) and it was a later date. Perhaps there was another club there before Rhoda Rogers!

Judy

I remember the name Rhoda Rogers. I left Birmingham in January 1961 and didn't go back for several years, so 1960 sounds about right.

Maurice

My friend worked as a hostess at the Rum Runner night club in the sixties and gave me this top they used to wear as a uniform. I have the matching clutch bag somewhere too. Anyone remember them?. They had sequins and pearls sewn on. Jean.

Our uniform in 1968 and '69 and '70 was a frilled blouse and a long black skirt. I have tried to upload a photo of the blouse, but I can't.

Ann

Jean,

I was a bit later than that. I wanted to show you the uniform we had, when I worked there. But I cannot upload photos.

Oh, I used to go to Rebecca's as well...
can't remember where on earth it was though...
I just can't picture the Cedar Club now, although I'm sure I've been there....we used to drink at the Duke of York further towards Hockley around that time too.
Rebeccas became Edwards no 8 and later just Eddies, a rock Venue, My sons band was the last to play it about 18 months ago. It burned down the same night!
Tha Fewtralls also had a club just off broad street calles Barbarellas and another by the old industry museum called Polyannas:p

does any one remember the RITZ in kings heath live music Sunday nights , saw some
great acts in the 60's Yardbirds,Bee Gee's, Small Faces, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues
Spencer Davis and many more .
The Ritz had a sister club in Handsworth called The Plaza , same acts only the Plaza
was open the Saturday night.
Also does any one remember the Chesterfield Club Shard End ?

Yes, I remember the Plaza, and I recently sold this bit of paper I had had in an old diary for 40 years for £300 to a stones collector!:):)

Can't upload it, but it shows "The much requested EAGLES GROUP from London" THE ROLLING STONES playing at the Handsworth Plaza on Friday 13th. September. We don't know the year, though.

I think that lencop is right. I remember a story at the time that the Krays tried to move in, but the Fewtrell's repelled them. There were about five or six Fewtrells brothers. All of them fairly tough characters. They also had a collection of 'assistants' that gave them support when needed. If there was ever any trouble at the Cedar, it didn't last very long. Any troublemakers were escorted to a little side room by the entrance (later to become a disco room) and 'taught' a lesson in how to behave. I don't know if anyone remembers the Planet. It was a local newspaper that only lasted a couple of years. It was in colour, and one of the iconic front pages was a full spread of a red E Type Jag with four of the brothers leaning on the wings. This was pre Barbarellas/Rebeccas when the Cedar was one of the top clubs in town.

I think that Jag. belonged to a man called Johnny Deakin.

I remember a club called the Le Metro it was under Snow Hill Station in one of the archways. What i liked about it was it was quite small and kind of reminded you of the Cavern Club. Always had a great crowd in there and the girls seemed to be quite hot.
Now it may be that someone has already mentioned this one but being lazy I was not going to wade through dozens of pages, I will do later though :):)

anyone remember the brum beat cavern .down summer hill.it was actually an old cellar but i loved it .water dripping off the walls .i remember seeing the mojos group there ...one girl i remember was "tex" she nicked my boyfriend he was called eddie furness. also gina lake ..it was a shilling to get in there then .barbarellas was on bingley hall site opposite register office in broad street .went to a rock'n'roll revival there in 1962 mike sheridan and the night riders a brummy group. i really thought he was cliff richard he took him off so well....great memories.

was the cedar club in solihull???? i used to watch pat wayne and his group and the rooney brothers there .pat was married to my sisterinlaw ....

I only remember the coffee bar at the top of Summer Hill called 'La Fiesta' Was there one in town called 'El Torro'?

Sandra,

I think you are confusing the Cedar Club with the Cresta Club which was in Lode Lane, Solihull. It used to have some top acts. I saw the wonderful Tommy Cooper there.

Old Boy

I was only talking about that club the other day, i wore my first pair of hot pants there.

I think this photo was taken at The Castaways. It was my best friend Pam's 21st. We're sharing a glass of bubbly with the singer Malcolm Roberts. He was the cabaret that night. He's now, sadly, deceased.

Yes, I remember Le Metro and used to go there in the late 60's (not quite sure if I was very 'hot' ;))

The place is still going as far as I know, I went there in the late 90's, it is now called Subway City and they took over the next arch so it's twice the size!

Did anyone go to the cavern club in 1963-64.....does anyone remember "tex"..she used to do "war dances".she used to say she was half red indian. Never saw her in daylight so couldnt see if it was true or not but she used to wear a feather in her hair lol....
