IN OUR GARDENS 2026

It’s been one of the worst years we’ve had here for growing runner beans. A very poor crop indeed.
As regards bugs, I was told a few years back by a gardener to plant nasturtiums where you plant runner beans because the blackfly will be attracted to those and leave the beans alone.
Lo and behold today I checked the leaves on the nasturtiums and they were covered in black fly.

We have had a bumper year, and a handful yesterday.Amazing for the time of year !

I'd noticed a few weeks ago shallow holes appearing in our front and back lawns for the first time in the 14 years at this address.
We did see a Hedgehog during last winter but I'm sure it would have needed an army of them to do the digging/damage we have now.
Put a Trailcam out there last night and maybe caught the culprit.

I know its been a funny year in the garden but over the last week or two our holly tree has suddenly burst into flower. Lots of little white flowers .- Hope they have time for them to turn into berries. Very odd.

That happened here a few weeks ago but don't you need two holly trees for berries Superdad?
Just spoke to my daughter who is a biologist and after I described the flowers she agreed with what you said and said that the tree is a male tree. Explains why we only get berries on the other trees but not this one. Mind you, still a bit odd to produce flowers in Oct. Too late - already have berries on the other trees so pollen is wasted.
