Jogesh Chandra Bose

I hadn't Pam. Thank you. Streets book rd. Shirley I think. Always thought it was Hall Green.
Definitely Shirley as it is a Solihull cemetery. Now only open for cremations as the burial sections are full. Drive past it several times a week. Grew up nearby. If the office can tell you where the grave is I can see if I can find it and photograph it.

Bless you. Will give them a call on Monday. Luckily still have people living with info. So my mom's aunt. Jogeshs great grandson. They have bits and pieces. Thnx Pam.

This gives us the year of reaching the US, being 1913 when he was aged about 17. He was lodging rather than with any family.

Radnor Ave is in ward 27, being East Baltimore. Johns Hopkins hospital was opened in 1889 in E Baltimore, just a spit from Radnor Ave.
Could the census show the other occupants at Radnor Ave. Medical Students ?
Peasant uprisings such as that in Pabna stemmed from poor relations between land owners and tenant farmers. The Rent Commission of the Bengal Legislative Council enacted the third Act of 1885 to define the rights and obligations of tenancies and thereby calm the unrest.

Jogesh was born in 1896 and the main disturbances were 20 years earlier. The Bengal Tenancy Act became enforced a decade earlier, although some local disputes continued.

If you could find someone with access to the 1913 passenger list it often tells the nearest relative.

I have a pal who has access to the International Ancestry and asked him to check and he replied. There are a few more avenues he could help with, but it is now becoming an extraordinary story !

It looks like he did not become a missionary, but may have a connection to marriage in a Baptist Church ?

Note his damning of England !

I just wondered if there was any restriction in the Baptist church to marriage to someone of another faith at the time ? I believe there was in the Catholic Church ?
Did he convert ?

The plot thickens. Certainly a story I'd left 15 months again. Thank you so much and your mate. Didn't think this would get so much info. Sat here shaking my head with the help.

A recap of the early years…

2 May 1896 – Born in India (place recorded as “Maruchgongus” or similar).
1913 – Arrives in Baltimore, aged 17.
1918 – Freshman medical student (yearbook) and registers for the U.S. draft.
1919 – Sophomore Medical Class.
1920 – Junior Medical Class; living on Radnor Avenue as a lodger.
1921 – Graduates M.D. from the University of Maryland. His yearbook biography praises him as the leading speaker and politician of the class.
1922 – Returns to England aboard the Majestic.
1923 – Gains MRCS and LRCP, marries Florence Rose Maddocks in Birmingham.
1925 onwards – Establishes his medical practice in Birmingham.

I can't answer for 1923 but in 1950 when my parents married (a Catholic to a non catholic) all that happened was a marriage ceremony with no nuptial mass.
I assumed it would be similar for other religions

Spoke to mom's cousin. She said he converted to baptism in America. Connecting he lived in Selly Park with the chaplain for a time. So you were spot on. She didn't know slot of information in America. Think you know he left India in 1913 so aged 7. He went to America with an aunt. His uncle was police force in India. He must have changed his thoughts on England. Apparently well thought of, carrying on practicing after losing an eye ..

That's his life story, wow, amazing. No idea or if possible to get an Indian birth certificate. Or other family, but thank you for all your hard research. I was stuck. Thnx, Keith

He was 17 in 1913 as he was born in 1896 ?
Yes Pam, my mistake. Did we find what year he left India?.His application for British Citizenship in 1961 states unknown father. Also listed all his residential addresses and wife's name etc. Thanks, Pam. My mom's cousin is 87, so really the only one with any knowledge of him. He was her uncle. The marriage certificate witnesses were her mother and father. Thanks again. Amazing the photo of him and not liking England. Understandable really when in India maybe.

They are from the international Ancestry. You may be able to obtain a better quality if they were downloaded with that in mind, but it was my friend that sent them.

Would like to find out his birthplace !
