The Key Hill Jewel Heist (1919): Looking for William J Dalton (Aliases: Jackson / Handley / Hadley)

Peetzer

proper brummie kid
Hi all,
I’m having a good go at tracking my great grandfather William John Dalton down (born 1889 in Birmingham) and I'm really hoping someone here might have some family lore, police ancestors, or local knowledge that could help me break down a brick wall.

He was a tinplate worker by trade, but spent most of the 1910s as an organised jewel thief. He had a very distinctive physical appearance: his right leg was shorter than his left, he had a deformed right foot, and loved to wear flashy suits and jewellery.

His known aliases that I've found are William Jackson, William Handley/ Hadley / Hinley

He and his wife, Fanny Dalton (nee. Roberts), used to travel by train to target towns and they would both often sing in local clubs and public houses (I would absolutely love to know more about this)

**(Autumn 1919)**
He and an accomplice named Frank Felton (a metal-dipper from Icknield Street) broke into Messrs. Warr Ltd and Messrs. Barnett on Key Hill, stealing £200 worth of stock (£10-12,000 worth today). They were chased down the street early in the morning by P.C. Moore and P.C. Kirtland.

Around the same time, he and another accomplice, William Hoar, were charged with breaking into Harry Friend’s jewellers on Soho Hill using a false key.

In 1919/1920, he was operating out of 29 Rodway Street, lodging with a George Frederick Everill/Everall, passing himself off as "Everill" and "John Handley"
William was caught, classified as a habitual criminal, and sent to Parkhurst Prison, most likely Camp Hill. When his sentence expired on 15 August 1928 he was transferred directly back to Birmingham labelled "Insane," and locked away in Birmingham City Mental Hospital, Winson Green / All Saints Hospital however I'm having trouble locating his whereabouts upon transfer and admission to the hospital and thereafter.

I've exhausted the ancestry and archives so here I am lol

I'd love to know if anyone has anymore information or interesting finds for this side of my family - His criminal career appeared to be extremely consistent from around 1907 onwards

Many thanks!

hi and welcome...william was certainly a colourful character..you seem to have found out a lot about him already so its doubtful we can find more...do you know when william and wife fanny died ?...as you say he had many alias names including hadley...i did notice that on his 1913 marriage cert one of the witnesses was a mary eliza hadley...just an observation

Thank you both! Thats correct - Your spot on the 1913 marriage cert regarding "Mary Eliza Hadley" is brilliant. I strongly suspect the registrar simply misheard the Brummie accent and wrote "Hadley" instead of "Handley," - Minnie Dalton, had William illegitimately in 1889 (hence him keeping the Dalton name), and then she moved in with Henry Handley and had a massive second family. I've also just made the connection that the John Handley living with a George Frederick Everill must've been his half brother rather than him using an alias. Great find with the marriage certificate notes, I must've skipped over that entirely. William's Father is currently still unknown as we think a travelling businessman may have come through birmingham got minnie pregnant then vanished. - Has me wondering who this Edward Dalton is on his marriage certificate, possibly a made up name?

Too many Williams!

and then it also seems after William was locked up in Winson Green Hospital after his final stint in HM Prison Parkhurst, Fanny moved on to Henry Blewer, she tried to remarry but because she was still married to William she couldn't.

What a mess - I get so confused as I'm doing this haha

So we have no idea what happened to William after his release from Parkhurst and admission to hospital in 1928, he just vanished. I'm currently waiting on what I think could be his death certificate so I can search the Birmingham Archives for any remaining All Saints records of his.

We do know that Fanny went on to live a life with Henry and they owned/ran a shop on 235 Burbury Street, Birmingham

It wasactually quite common years ago for illegitimate children to "save face" by "making up" a Father's name and occupation on a marriage cert.
When Minnie married Henry she is down as a spinster so Dalton is likely to be her maiden name.

Thank you Janice, I appreciate your replies! We've managed track down the Dalton name as far back as 1772 then a dead end.

looking at the 1939 census fanny dalton is down as married..living with henry blewer single..its says she married henry on 2nd sept 1959 so maybe we can assume william dalton dies before she was able to marry henry blewer..i have a death for a fanny blewer in 1964 but you most likely have all this info

Another great spot - Just spoke to my mother and she said Fanny died as Dalton, she seems certain they never married. I'm currently looking for a 1959 marriage certificate as we speak though. She also mentioned divorce was a huge social no no. So everyone tended to lie, and it was also very expensive, she didn't mention being widowed. She noted the 1939 census was used to issue NHS cards and people often changed names , hence crossed out and new name added based on what they were told... I'm looking into this though.

An incredible find for the old Burbury St property! It's noted in the Kellys directorys that Henry was a shop keeper and on the census records it notes Fanny as a grocer :)

this is the possible death i found..can your mother remember what year fanny died ?

The plot thickens.... Theres a death registered for both a Fanny Dalton AND Fanny Blewer... for 1964.

On our ancestry family tree she's listed

yes i noticed both of those deaths..the fanny dalton living in burbury st was born on 31st of march 1892 this is according to the 1939 census..on the 1961 electoral register she is still living there as fanny dalton so begs the question did she really marry harry blewer in 1959 ? we have to remember that the electoral register were sometimes not published until 2 years after they were taken so she may have been a blewer by then..what we need is to find the electoral rolls for about 1963/5

Thats an excellent find, the closest I've been able to get an actual birth date for her as all the census records I looked at were stating "est. 1892/1893/1894" depending on when the census was taken in the early 1900s

I can't find a Blewer/Dalton marriage,
neither can i jan..what we need is to find her on the 63/65 electoral rolls to see what name she went under then...if we find her under fanny dalton then its a good bet she did not marry harry blewer

I would be tempted to buy both of these to see if they are the same person. I know the Dalton one says page 427 but on the original sheet it actually could be 422 the same as the Blewer entry.

Please do come back and let us know what you find.
Nothing is more frustrating than trying to help and not hearing the next bit of the story.
