Turner’s Modeldrome

Long ago my Dad and older brothers (and occasionally myself, though I was very young) were regular customers of a model shop at Primrose Hill called Turner’s Modeldrome. Looking online through early 1970s copies of AeroModeller magazine the address is given as 24 Teviot Grove, Kings Norton. However, looking in another magazine from 1954 I was surprised to find the address is given as 734 Pershore Road, Selly Park. Can anyone please help me find out when the shop opened, moved or if the owner Dennis Turner ever had two stores open at the same time? It would bring back a lot of very happy childhood memories.

John.

In 1950 no. 734 was Whittngham, newsagents. By 1955 it was Mrs Elizabeth M. Turner, newsagent. In 1956 it was W. G. Smith, newsagent. In 1956 there was a Mrs. Elizabeth V Turner further down Pershore Road at 1472, but as .a confectioner. No Dennis Turner listed .
Only D Turner in 1970-73 is a fruiterer, and no listing for anyone in Teviot Grove. When do you remember the shop in Primrose Hill?

Thanks, Mike. The shop at Primrose Hill was there in the 1960s and existed until the early 1980s at least, I think, and also doubled as a newsagent. Run by Dennis Turner and another chap called Paul.

My comments were from directories. For most years Primrose hill does not seem to be listed. Possibly kit was technically outside the Birmingham area

You may be right, Mike, and thank you once again. To clarify further, it was in a row of single storey shops close to the Greenwood Tree pub.

The shop was run by Dennis and his brother Paul. My dad was best friends with them both having known them for many years. Dennis sadly died, leaving Paul, with the help of his wife, to run the shop. Always remember the large wooden propeller above the shop door with a clock in the centre.

Thank you for the reply, Gary, the prop rings a bell but I’m not sure as I was about the age you see in my picture when I used to go there! As I recall there were model aircraft of various types and sizes suspended from the ceiling and I think the counter ran along the back and possibly the left hand side but I could be wrong. Any other memories or clarifications you may have would be very welcome.

My dad knew both Dennis and Paul from the early 60’s. If I recall correctly, Paul had a Healey which my dad drove once or twice!
As you entered the shop, the counter ran along the left hand side. There were models suspended from the ceiling of the shop. Both Dennis and Paul were into the RC Models. Hit dad hard when Dennis passed away.
We lived on the Pool Farm Estate, but always got our Sunday papers from the shop, and occasionally, the Sports Argus.

Thank you Gary, my family lived at Pool Farm and then just across the way from Turner’s at Primrose Hill until I was born, then we moved to Kings Heath. My memories of Turner’s are really quite vague as I was quite young and didn’t visit that often, though I remember choosing boxes of Airfix toy soldiers that my Dad bought me each time we went. My only other memories of the area involved going to the Doctor’s surgery on Hillmeads Road, but that’s another story.

Lived in Loweswater House on Pool Farm until we moved to Hawkesley in 73. A lot closer to the shop. Remember the Drs! Dr Beaton-Hird. I’m 65 in July
