Do you mean the 'big' Crown & Cushion on the corner of Wellington Road, or the 'little' Crown & Cushion right opposite, on Birchfield Road?

Being dragged up in Perry Barr, it was the 'little' pub that was known as the 'old' Crown & Cushion.

In the 1960's the 'big' C&C used to have some good bands on, on Sunday nights if I recall. I know for sure I saw John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton there (my life-long heroes) and I think I remember seeing The Alan Price Set (not sure about this - you know they say that if you can remember the Sixties, you weren't there...)

Big Gee
Hi remember the place very well played there a couple of times myself in 67 and my mate had his reception there happy days

This image of a lounge at the C&C is dated 1938. Would have been on the first floor. I remember sitting on a sofa on a landing like this (but not in this style). There was a function hall off it, it was at the top of some stairs.

I can even remember what I was wearing: printed skirt (home sewn by me), brown suede boots, and a brown v-neck jumper. Strange how images can spark vivid memories.Would have been early 1970s.

Your memory is better than mine - I can't remember the lounge area on the first floor!
I used to go to see bands there in the mid/late 60s, they usually played in the big downstairs room but occasionally upstairs.

It was a very dark and dingy area with brown leather sofas. It was really a landing at the top of a flight of stairs but don't know exactly whereabouts in the C&C it was situated.

You have to wonder where some 'clubs' got their name.

I would guess the night was put on by/as the Bent Boot. I don't remember seeing that one though.
I do remember some nights being advertised as Gotham City, probably because the TV Batman series of the 60s was so popular!

Edit..well, maybe because the side of the Crown and Cushion was in Wellington Road?!!

This illustrates how state of the art and well designed new Old C&C building was from its air conditioning and temperature controlled beers to its sound-proofing and purpose-built rooms. It was a clearly thought through plan with the comfort and enjoyment of the customer in mind. You really have to wonder at the cost of all this ! And it was just prior to WW2.

The older Old Crown and Cushion (which would have been in front of this 'new' Old Crown and Cushion whilst it was being built - see post #28) would have gone by this time.

The intro to the article is a bit misleading Eric. I suspect you're referring to the one on the opposite side of the road in amongst the row of shops ? I was referring to the one which stood in front of the 1930s Old C&C !! This Old C&C wasn't there in the photo dated 1959 - see post #38

Discussions about the various C&Cs always get confusing as there have been too many of them and in different positions in Perry Barr !

Yes, all quite confusing with the Crown and Cushions!
If I remember correctly the small C&C on the other side of Birchfield Road was called The New C&C, that would have been because it was newer that the original old C&C on the corner with Wellington Road!
Before I knew that I used to wonder why the 'new' one was older than the 1930s one.

yes you are correct sparks the little one on the opposite side of the road was called the new crown and cushion...it is very confusing because as most will know excluding that little one there was 3 crown and cushions on the same site corner of birchfield road and wellington road..this is a st view of the crown and cushion 3 which was demolished in 2020 i think

The 1930s new Old C&C seems to have got off to a good start. Lots of events were being held in 1938 and 1939. But the start of WW2 in late 1939, inevitably, seems to have had an impact, with fewer hosted and less elaborate events.

Sadly for some in these group photos, the celebrations would be their last. They look glamorous, and the new setting must have added so much enjoyment to the events. In 1939 the Old C&C joined other pubs with helping the war recruitment drive with a 'Bureau' in the pub car park. .

My aunts Eva & Daisy (sisters) were married at Trinity Church, corner Birchfield and Trinity Rds with receptions at the Crown & Cushion. The weddings were about 5 or 6 years apart in the early fifties. Yes, I had a great time!
